My favorite anime of all time is Mononoke, and the art is definitely the part of it that first got my attention. It got me thinking, "What other anime or manga out there have really unconventional art?" I wanna see some art that's out of the norm. Whether it be really pretty or so wack that you have no clue what's happening. I'm curious to see what else there is, so post what you think is a weird art style!

Well, Gankutsuou has an art very similar to Mononoke (amazing show btw), with a kind of use of textures.

Most of the shows directed by Masaaki Yuasa also have a distinctive art, like
Eizouken, Kaiba, Kemonozume and Ping Pong

Kuuchuu Buranko and to a lesser extent C, directed both by the same guy who directed Mononoke, have an unconventional art too.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei is what you're looking for. Everything in this anime is wacky, everything. But this is one of my favorite anime of all time, because of its wackiness, you should try it.

Or at this point you shoukd just check every anime Masaaki Yuasa directed in.

I'm not always a Yuasa fan, but I enjoyed Eizouken and his film Lu Over the Wall.

Somali to Mori no Kamisama has a pretty distinctive look.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisee is a fairly conventional story about a Japanese girl who travels to Paris in the late 19th century. However Satelight employed a team of French illustrators for this show who imported Western styles of drawing, particularly the use of perspective which is rare in Japanese anime. (Obviously not "wack".) Contrast this "superflat" image from Mononoke with the scenes in the trailer below, particularly those in the galerie.

The illustrations in Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko are bleak but beautiful.

And this one I heard had a style that took seven years to create!

Bakemonogatari isn't a unique art style but how they tell the story and frame dialogue makes it unique! One more- try the Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) if you like 3D and stretchy fight scenes.
