A lot of people consider Hisoka to be one of the main villains and antagonists of Hunter x Hunter and whilst I agree he has committed horrible crimes, I wouldn't necessarily say he's a villain. This is my reasons why I don't think he is:

1. He does not want to kill Gon when he is still physically weak and spares his life only so he can become stronger, as Hisoka only wants to challenge the higher tier opponents.

2. He left the Phantom Troupe, which was a good move.

3. Whilst he has done harm to Gon and the others, he has not tried any attempt to murder them.

4. He doesn't have any major goals or motives like most villains do. He just wants to challenge his victims.

5. He has actually shown his decent/good side. I will try to avoid giving out too many spoilers but prime example is the Phantom Rouge movie. He warned Kurapika and Leorio about Omokage's powers and their influence, and he even saved Gon and Killua. In Greed Island, he lead them the way to the City of Aiai. There's more examples but as I mentioned, I don't want to give too much away.

6. He will not let anyone else attack Gon under his watch. I know people will say it's because he wants to fight Gon for himself and he does, but only when Gon has fulfilled his potential.

7. He has a liking for Machi and even though she is still part of the Phantom Troupe and sides with Chrollo, he is still grateful to her for helping revive him.

Hisoka is generally not a good person at all and is a psychopath and a murderer. But even he has his limits and knows not to push them. With those reasons, I don't really consider him to be a main villain. I think maybe a psychopath who doesn't know what side of the fence he's on.

Hisoka is antagonist, although he is a very complex character.

No, he’s not really a villain or antagonist. He’s not a good person, but to be the bad guy of a story he’d have to be in direct conflict with Gon somehow. Instead, because of the way Hunter x Hunter is set up, if they ever do cross paths on opposite sides (they don’t really), Hisoka would just be a short-term buffer to the task at hand. They only stick around each other if one of them has something to gain, and I don’t really think that’s the job of a villain or antagonist in a story.

He’s an anti-hero if anything. He never causes any major problems for our MCs throughout the story. However much he does support Gon, he still wants to kill him.
pls play jet set radio future for the microsoft xbox. thanks

He's indeed a great antihero. His primary motive is seeking good fights. The only reason he joins the phantom troupe is to fight the boss. The reason he keeps Gon alive is because he sees a potential great warrior to fight later. He teams up with Gon & Killua in the volleyball match is because he sees Razor as a worthy opponent. Everything he does in the series is create opportunities for him to fight the greatest warriors. He doesn't pick sides. That's what's so awesome about him.

I agree to those who said he’s more of an antihero than anything. He never really actively goes against the “good guys” and even if he has, it isn’t motivated by some grand evil scheme of sorts. He has devious nature, for sure, but his interest is very rarely in direct opposition of our protagonists’ goal. Which is why he’s one of, if not the most fascinating character in this series.

He is a rival to Gon, but he is not evil or a real antagonist to the Hunter Association.

Definitely a antagonist, but to complex to just be a villian or hero.

He hasn't done anything major but he has killed people before and most characters see him as a bad person but I don't think he is considered a villain.

I find him likable because he's one of the few rational villains in anime. He's more than just selfish or spiteful or egotistic... he's got his own preferences and hobbies... he interacts with most people with a certain level of respect and/or indifference... and he seems like someone you could have a normal conversation with. He's a relatable villain in terms of general human traits... something about him isn't as fictional, yanno?
