To me it's an interesting one.
Galaxy 1 (not played 2) to me whether the intro, the level design, the missions, the variety of power uses (I like how the Ice flower is used for platforms instead of just freezing enemies like in 2D Mario games, I really like that). I don't use many of moves really at all just the basics really as I never see a need for flips and more in Mario games 2D that brought them over or 3D.
The bosses were interesting, the level designs were really cool, sure you get your standard ones but the more out there ones are really well done and shows me 'oh Nintendo can have more than grass, snow and so on worlds in 3D, something 2D Mario suffers from' and is the side of Mario games I do like to see and I assume others would agree.
I think better than Mario 64 with just the right improvements. I didn't like Mario 64 very much, never played Sunshine so I think they really put effort into the right areas. To me as someone not really into Mario games I can see why others that also didn't like Mario find Galaxy appealing.
The gravity/environments are pretty good, they did test me in some levels with the inside of structures or working out where to go before I eventually got used to it.
Levels/Planet comparison of Galaxy 1 and Ratchet 2&3:
If I were to compare though they weren't as appealing as Ratchet and Clank 2 or 3 the physics or level design in some areas especially as they are small areas your navigating (which isn't a bad thing as someone into linear game design and it looks really fancy too and I know having rotation walking and enemy paths and using power ups isn't easy but still) where you have a literal planet/moons to explore two boss fights or a jamming array moon in Ratchet 2, or to find the goal to the second planet/collectibles/an asteroid belt for a skill point in 3 with it having 2 planets at one location (Obani Gemini, I think I just played a section of Mario Galaxy with an asteroid belt possibly when I popped it in a few days ago for the last few galaxies I had left to do late in the game as I took a break from the game) and done in 2003 & 4 before Galaxy 1 even came out and I always have the comparison in mind having played Galaxy. The scale doesn't matter but if looking at them or in conversation I will say Ratchet's were more impressive even if empty in some cases but with different goals in mind, just as much as Xenoblade Chronicles is an impress use of Wii/Wii U hardware on systems many would experience PS3/360 onwards would be pulling off those levels of open world design because Monolith use Nintendo hardware well), the spin move was pretty alright didn't bother me using the Wiimote that way.
Mario 64 stuff:
I don't care for Mario games usually (only played 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros DS/Wii, 3D Land and Galaxy 1), I thought 64 was fine (PC port or 64 DS) but not that fun to play.
I've had more fun with Spyro or other platformers of the PS1/N64/Saturn time with ideas, controls and so on that I just didn't get into 64 that much. Give Space Station Silicon Valley, Chameleon Twist or Banjo even on the N64.
I got lost in Mario 64, didn't like the controls, found the worlds fine for being on a 64 cartridge limit and making the most of the hardware and storage format it was on and making mission design a thing (even if I didn't hate Jumping Flash having worlds with carrot collectables as the goal either per level or Crash being 2D game design in 3D environments even if I suck at Crash and actually beat Jumping Flash). Mario in Galaxy felt better to play, which is better than I can say for Mario Bros Wii which I find unplayable at times because the button layout on the Wiimote and the game wanting you to sprint or do some things for jumping and keeping up sucks and the Nunchuk/Wiimote control scheme is better but still awkward for me. Mario Bros DS I didn't have that much trouble I just suck because it's 2D Mario and it's difficulty of oldschool and floatiness is something I'm not good at. I still beat the main game not the side content but still more than I can say for Bros Wii so Galaxy 1 was at least playable for me and I prefer 3D games more too. |
