Hey, all.

I'm currently searching for historical anime that takes place during the Meiji Era, or transitions from the Tokugawa Era into the Meiji Era during the anime itself, and has a good story to it. I don't have a genre preference and don't mind if it's an older anime or newer one.

Rurouni Kenshin is a good example that I can think of, but the anime does not need to be a chanbara (samurai) anime like Kenshin. Aside from Kenshin, I am currently watching Golden Kamuy, which I know is another series taking place during this era.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you can toss my way. Thank you!

Ojiisan no Lamp is really good, its only a short 24 minute movie but it tells a good story about Japan westernizing in the Meiji era.

Golden Kamuy was on the tip of my tongue until I read that you are watching it.

This article at ANN on anime from various historical periods suggests Peacemaker Kurogane and Laughing Under the Clouds as representatives from the Meiji period: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-list/2015-08-01/.91067

I've seen more shows about the late Tokugawa period than about Meiji.

Oh! Edo Rocket is a satire on political repression set in 1843-44 during the Tenpou Reforms. It's adapted from a stage play by the screenwriter for Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, Nakashima Kazuki.

Another show from the same period is Sarai-ya Goyou. It follows a recently-discharged samurai who encounters a small band of kidnappers and must decide whether to join them.

The stylized horror stories from Nakamura Kenji, the "Bake Neko" arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales and its continuation, the series Mononoke, also take place late in the Edo period.

If you're interested in portrayals of Japanese history, I strongly suggest giving Hyouge Mono a shot. It's set during the Sengoku period with a cast of historical personages. The one deviation I know of from historical canon concerns its depiction of the events at Honnouji shrine. (Each episode opens with the line, "This is a work of fiction.")

As I recall, the opening segment of Aoi Bungaku, "No Longer Human," might take place in the Meiji period, or perhaps later. It's been a while since I've watched it.

Thank you! It sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. I've added it. :)

Wow, thank you so much!

Saraiya Goyou and Hyouge Mono sound like exactly what I'm looking for, and I'll check out the rest. If "No Longer Human" is based off Osamu Dazai's fiction literature work, then it'll most definitely be during the Meiji era, as that's the era he's from, which would be amazing. I love Osamu Dazai's narratives. He was an extraordinary author.

Thank you again! I'm very grateful!

Yes, it's an adaptation of the Dazai novel. Aoi Bungaku is an anthology of novel adaptations.
