While I really don't need to point out everything, and have no need to go in detail with literal or liberal, ep 1 just put me off so badly that it ruined the experience.

One line: "Rena, enough with the YOLO handbook"

How did something that should've been translated along the lines of "you're saying too much" turn into something this westernised? This line alone is enough to say that crunchyroll is not making a westernised script to "appeal" to an outside audience, but just taking the piss. Me branding this as westernisation is actually a compliment, since this singular line doesn't even derive from the actual translation

Edit: Because there are some people trying to bring up the stupid "why don't you watch it raw" argument, so I've put my reasoning below.

While I don't know Japanese fluently, I've picked up enough from anime itself to understand a lot of it, and am confident enough to point out something in the sub that doesn't even derive from the Japanese dub, which is why I'm calling out CR for failing something they're paid to do, which is TRANSLATE. I would like to enjoy watching an anime, and watch humour that comes from the anime itself, rather than watch some random memer thinking it's funny to add memes in to hook in braindead viewers.

I rarely use CR subs, only if I'm desperate, and hearing that makes me very sad.

To be honest, that line also caught me a bit off-guard, but I let it slide.

Unrelated statement. I could just tell you to go back to your neo yokio or rick and morty for your memes, and it'll be a relatable statement on your terms.

Unrelated but true. If you know better, watch it raw. Why you even complain about TL with your brilliant Japanese, sir?
I'll tell you a secret. English sub has English memes for English dudes. And that line was actually funny, lol.
But there's always that last man standing weeb. At least nobody cares 'bout likes of you.

"Unrelated but true" I never knew a statement such as "Just watch raw, you weeb" could be true in any way when it doesn't have any factual value in it, let alone any value. You can't even call it an insult.

As for you asking why I'm complaining about a translation with your weak sarcasm, I obviously don't know Japanese fluently, otherwise I wouldn't watch a sub, but I guess some people need babysteps and can't figure such obvious things on their own do exist, so I thank you for giving me awareness.

I didn't know what I should've expected from someone who watches anime just for the memes that don't even come from the anime itself, but from people who are attempting to gain viewers with their own memes because they don't believe that the anime itself is able to do so.

Is the only thing you've got going for you is to try and "insult" someone you've never met on the internet by calling them a weeb? I'll tell you a secret. Calling someone a weeb on an anime forum doesn't mean anything. Trying to "insult" someone on the internet who you know nothing about when they haven't said anything offensive directed at an individual or group is beyond pathetic, and the only thing I feel is pity for you.

I just thought people that were licenced to stream anime would have actually done their job, but now I know who CR's target audience is.

I'm agreeing to this person's protest because not only Americans ("westerners") or people aware with those kind of millennial phrases use English sub, or use CR for all I know. When I read that yolo phrase, I honestly didn't catch it at first. This isn't fansub, it's official right? Why not just do it normally

My point was that if you don't like one sub, you can always try another sub. Because I watched the episode with French sub and I had no issue with it. But if I had issue with the French sub, I can always watch it in another language.

English is my first and only spoken language, so that isn't an option for me, and that isn't the issue I'm addressing either, since I can always wait a bit for decent English fansubs to be released.

The issue I'm addressing here is how one of the only sources of English legal streaming for anime, which you can consider official subbing since they are licensed to stream, aren't actually doing their job of providing proper subtitles.

This isn't even up for a debate of whether or not localisation of the translation should be used or not, it was equivalent to some random memer posting an abridged version, or using spoof subs on an "official" stream. While there are multiple phrases that are fairly localised, they aren't a real issue since they still derive from the actual translation, but when this "YOLO handbook" phrase came out, it was just so blatantly obvious that I felt the need to address the issue. This is one of the few CR subs that I've seen in a while, and the fact that the one CR subbed anime I watched happened to show this, it truly concerns me as to whether one of the only sources of legal streaming is really bringing in viewers the right way.

That being said, it is already sad as it is that fansubbers put in a lot more effort compared to people who are getting paid to do it.

There is, and always has been, and always will be, a gap between those who do something to get paid VS those who do something because they love doing it. If you are doing something because you love it, then "good enough" would rarely actually be good enough for you, and mediocrity is actually desirable when it comes to translation. Middle-ground is usually best whenever there is not a direct translation since middle-ground is rarely offensive to viewers.

On the other hand, I've gotten rather irritated with fansubbers removing memes from official scripts when there are actual translations/correlations. I say it's just as big a Bad Thing to do as CR inserting them, and both cases can enter rewrite territory if they're not careful.

I've long since gotten used to CR's spotty translation record. Sometimes it's spot on, sometimes it's waaaaaaaaaaay in left field, and I feel that it's simply due to the styles of individual translators/editors working for them.
