(1968) the mops - psychadelic sounds on japan
(1971) blues creation - demon & eleven children
It's kinda fodder actually. If you might interesting to check some of their early adsorbed western rock scene

(1971) happy end - kazemachi roman
Folk rock. Considered as one if not the best record there

(1974) gedo - gedo
Hard rock, proto punk, same vibe with mc5

(1974) sadistic mika band - black ship
Glam Rock, fusion

(1979) ymo - solid state survivor
Electronic

(1979) friction - atsureki
Punk rock~post punk

(1980) miki matsubara - pocket park
Pop

(1981) inu - meshi kuna!
Post punk

(1984) jun togawa - tamahime sama
Art pop, new wave

Yet to hear grey skies and her album after romantique but Sunshower was truly dope must said, with haruomi hosono in the bass if im not mistaken. It tag along with city pop scenery just yet to dig deep into form of albums for each respective artist i'd found the like miki matsubara and hiromi iwasaki. you can seek many of it compilations scattered on youtube.

@DateYutaka also has many early metal and vkei on his sleeves if you might be interesting.

Can you highlight the really good ones and specify the genres? This is kind of overwhelming.

Nice the mention of hosono's, the man simply underrated abroad. Other than his time on happy end and some ymo(plus him as session bassist in i guess) I'd heard his solo album hosono house and paraiso, the later was quiet good. Also He did tremendous job in night on galavtic road ost.

Adition
https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/City+Pop/
Rym cover city pop quiet a lot.
i still don't have feel with tatsuro yamashita's solo work (the same feel i got with ohtaki) but damn the rest of ex happy end so influential developed this chilling sound, with theeir credits scattered around

There's so many LPs, that I can't list them all, so I'm just going to name a bunch of great Japaneses singers/bands from the 70s & 80s:

Seiko Matsuda
Akina Nakamori
Momoe Yamaguchi
Mako Ishino
Checkers
Masahiko Kondou
Seiji Tanaka
Pink Lady
Yuu Hayami

I'm rather shocked that nobody else in this thread named any of what's on my list, because they were very popular in Japan.

personally thought i didn't found some of them really that interesting tbh. the like that eternal idol seiko matsuda, some if songs i'd checked not really hit me - ijust realize' ex happy end matsumoto wrote most of it-
Maybe worth to look back, Mind just to name some of their essential LP to check for?

Well, I haven't listened to a lot of her music, but "North Wind" sounds pretty good. She also did the singing voice in "Penguin's Memory: Shiawase Monogatari," although I don't think that Anime has ever been fansubbed.

I've always been a big fan of upbeat music that you can dance to. I've never liked the Japanese soul/funk singers much, because most of their music sounds like boring elevator/lounge music, and that stuff isn't my cup of tea.

I'm just gonna listen to a bunch of Seiko Matsuda's albums. Earlier, I downloaded ten of them.

The Mega.nz links are good. I listened to Squall and North Wind so far. Liked them.

Not sure if this is old enough for you, but this is a classic, or so I've been told :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULSnsWD27qo

another from same guy (Nakanishi Yasushi) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIYszWVI5as

^the above may have been rerecorded in more recent times

Some other artists I know:
DEEN - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAwVMAj_bfk
T-Bolan

Many more, but hard to remember, I've never heard of any of the ones listed above.. guess I'm not a fan of old jpop, or they are simply too hard to find. In fact, even new jpop is incredibly hard to find compared to music from other asian countries.

As someone who watch old mecha anime, I must've stumbled upon many old songs from those as well.
Actually, I have watched many anime from 90s, and like 2 from the 80s, but it's probably not worth mention anime songs here.
