Basically, something that shows life in Japan preferably during the 20/21st century. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd recommend a book called I am a Cat by Natsume Soseki because that reflects life in Japan in the early 20th century probably better than an anime could.
The beginning episodes of Aoi Bungaku (based off of another Japanese novel) also show Japanese society in the early 20th century.

Hotaru no Haka/Grave of the Fireflies - It does a pretty good job on a particular walk of life from WW2. Although it's fantastic, it's also pretty heartbreaking.

Nobunaga Concerto - The concept is kinda weird (21st-century student gets sent back to feudal Japan and impersonates Oda Nobunaga). It's 3D as well but overall is pretty good. I'd say it's worth a shot however, feudal Japan is pretty different from 20th/21st Century Japan.

Two slice-of-life shows set around 1964-65
Showa Monogatari - lower-middle-class family life in Tokyo
Sakamichi no Apollon - kids encounter jazz

In Sakura Quest, five young women try to resuscitate tourism in a rural Japanese town. Airing now.

Two shows about traditional Japanese games
3-gatsu no Lion - an introverted boy aspires to become a professional Shougi ("Japanese chess") master
Chihayafuru - a team of high schoolers play an arcane card game called karuta; lots of material about famous Japanese poetry as well

Hikaru no Go would qualify but the main character is a boy who is inhabited by the spirit of a Heian-era Go master. The rest of the show is pretty realistic.

Fune wo Amu ("The Great Passage") is a lovely little show about people trying to publish a new Japanese dictionary.

Gin no Saji ("Silver Spoon") - adventures of a boy attending an agricultural high school

Hataraki Man - a 28-yo female editor fights overwork and patriarchy at a Japanese magazine

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - a caring young woman helps two kids reach home after a major earthquake; obviously not "realistic" since such an event hasn't happened, but Studio Bones invested considerable research into imagining what might happen

Bartender - A variety of people visit Bar Eden Hall where a preternaturally insightful bartender finds just the right alcoholic concoction to ease their worried souls; on YouTube
