Because we have a soul. We create a sort of attachment to the characters. The longer you know them the more of an impact it makes.Easy, Just like IRL

Empathy, brah. You immerse yourself in their world and become emotionally attached.

I'm sure there's some science shit out there that proves this.

Why We Grieve Fictional Characters
"TV fuels and sustains social and cultural bonds. TV series are especially powerful because they unfold over time, giving viewers a chance to think about and discuss the characters and the storylines with fellow viewers," said Russell. "Many societal trends, for better or for worse, emerge from TV series and become part of our cultural lingo and lifestyles, in the real world."

So anime watchers are more prone to this. Not all, but it's understandable why.

Because we have feelings. We open our hearts to become immersed in another world, and tragic things in that world become tragic for you. It's the same thing with scary movies. You know they're not real but it doesn't stop you from getting spooked if done well. I personally can't make it through the end of Ano Hana without crying myself dry.

Uh, it's kinda simple @rebornnora. You'd have to be stupid to not understand. In all honesty, I think this thread is more of poking fun of those who do cry. EDIT: Actually, looking at your profile, you think Kirito was revived... God damn, you're stupid. Believe it or not, he never died.

Back onto topic, it's the connections people make with the characters. You watch them develop. You come to love some of them. I haven't cried when many characters died. However, I cried while reading Koe no Katachi. I have gone through some of the exact same experiences, growing up with hearing aids myself. And some kids came to be shunned a few years later as a result. It hits home to me.

I'm guessing the same is for others. Regardless of the fact that they are anime characters, they are characters. I cry when some characters in books I love die.

Please use common sense.

Depends. I usually don't cry cause I don't care. Especially if it is for some generic boring shounen. I usually feel more if the anime and characters are better - and even then more for other stuff like friendship between guys.

Deaths ... depends on the atmosphere. Most anime aren't doing a good job in making people cry.

More like "okay he is dead. lets move on."

if i'm attached to the character in an emotionally invested way, any tragedy against them is saddening

Empathy and sympathy as other poster said, make us to feel emotionally attached to them. But the question still can be pushed further, why we have that feeling for fictional characters in the first place?

Maybe the reason because we somehow -to certain extent- start to believe that they were real. Their personality and trait were so well written to the degree we start to think that way—this also explain why we only get this emotional feeling with this type of character. I remember the feeling of knowing a character we like dies almost resembles when I hear death news from someone I know in my neighborhood.

You don't have to necessarily cry to be affected by something in my experience.

I usually don't cry when the character dies, but when the flashback happens to show all the cute things the character used to do, then I usually cry buckets.

You make it sound like people cry about the death of redshirts. Like, nobody cares about the people that died in Corpse Party or Another, because they weren't developed.

Crying isn't a bad thing; it doesn't make you a pussy or something. It just means you enjoyed a certain character's company.

Same thing why people cry when their pet or family member dies.

2 things that can make an anime character's death have the impact to cry is A) how loved they were personally by myself and B) the music that accompanied during his death scene.
