I'm looking for anime that makes you say "where has this been all my life?"

I tend to lean towards romance, school, action (some but not completely), fantasy, scifi. I also enjoy animes with strong hidden potential like in Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei.

check out my list to see if I already have it on there:

Try Kodomo no Omocha (school/romance). That's how I felt when I first saw it. For fantasy I suggest Tezuka Osamu no Buddha and Princess Mononoke.

I saw your anime list and have concluded you have the same anime tastes as me, so here are my recommendations:

Itazura na Kiss (The most conclusive romance anime ever)

Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita (cause you liked Hataraku Maou-sama)

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (not sure if you'll like it, but give it a try. I liked it. Its kinda like Mahouka where Both protagonists are deemed the weakest (in magic) and berated by his peers in their school, but only because the evaluations of them are selective, which neglects their other superior strong points (their physical abilities) that may even surpass other so called "geniuses.")

Gokukoku no Brynhildr (Full on sci-fi with romance, action and stuff)

Aishiteruze Baby (more romance and kawaiiness than action fantasy or sci-fi)

Midori no Hibi (weird but classic romance i suppose)

Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (saw this in ur ptw, lemme tell you it has romance in it, as well as the action and sci-fi stuff, so don't waste time watching this)

Thank you, I've added Princess Mononoke onto my queue because it's been a staple in the anime world but other than that, I honestly have habit of being very picky with the art so I tend to shy away from older anime.

There's some good titles in there that have peeked my interest a little. Itazura no Kiss seemed a little too cliche for me from the get go but I may consider picking it up again.

I added Yuusha ni Narenakatta onto my list as a consideration but it seemed a little unoriginal but ill give it a shot.

As for Cavalry, I must've forgotten to put that on the list, but these are the kind of anime that I reeeeeally enjoy the most!

I added Brynhildr onto my list, seems to have a pretty interesting plot.

Aishiteruze and Midori didnt seem too attractive from the outside but I won't know until I try.

Kiseijuu seemed a little off from my usual art tastes even though I have it on my PTW.

The biggest things I look for is plot/character development and Art.

I've added a couple to my PTW list that I may consider getting a feel of. Im not sure which Ghibli movies you are talking about and can't really pinpoint which one it is.

I forgot about Shokugeki no Souma, I almost finished it while it was airing but it got too hard to wait for. I should finish it sometime in the future.

I binged watched Akatsuki no Yona and Erased all yesterday completing both and Yona had a very interesting plot and I was very interested in its development but it seemed to lack captivating it's audience.

While Erased on the other hand was very captivating, each episode felt long and full of information that got me thinking but the ending left me scratching my head a little wanting a little more story but not much can be done in 12 episodes. I still believed it deserved a high rating

I'm saying this to kind of give a sense of what I look for and my thought process as I watch each episode. Animes that seem to short and rushed but have fascinating art and plot, get my attention and I tend to finish them but they won't receive high praise since it feels lacking.

Also as a former classical musician, I always look for anime that have great scores that compliment the plot and bring out emotions, I can't think of any examples easily but I know Clannad and Angel Beats did a very good job at that.

Yes I've noticed that those movies are staples in the anime community and I may consider watching these because I know for a fact the plot is very satisfying but my greatest hesitation is the old art and slow pace that leave me bored at some parts.

these anime are not supposed to let you feel cool action or amazing mind blowing plots. they show the beauty of anime. just a relaxing smooth well feeling warm art.

I can definitely agree with that, Like i very much enjoyed Spirited Away even when I was a child as it was something that expressed just that. But I'm not entirely looking for those sort of animes at the moment but more when I'm at a block.

+1 Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

A title that sat too long in my PTW that elicited the same reaction from me shortly after starting it:
Maria-sama ga Miteru -- And the follow on seasons get even better plot-wise, feels-wise, art-wise. Relationship chart:
It also has nice classical bits that fit the mood nice though they are limited in variety and get used repeatedly.

So Ra No Wo To (Sound of the Sky) -- Top 3 OST for me.

A couple of gems you need to watch sooner or later:
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Haibane Renmei

Definitely Nana, it's a true drama-music-romance masterpiece. It made me cry.
But one of the Nanas is really stupid and she can make you nervous easily.

Still great, but much cuter - Tamako Love Story. There is series called Tamako Market which tells about the past. It's just a prequel. But you don't even need to get accomplished with the series. Just watch the movie if you want to see some romance. The series is still good, i enjoyed both of them.

Don't have the time to check comments so I have no idea whether this is recommended or not, but currently the best series I've seen in quite a while (especially in SoL genre) I recommend Usagi Drop. I wish there were more episodes.

TBH One Piece Art and Acting reaaaally bother me. I stay away from the big mainstream like Fairy Tale and One Piece (though Fairty Tale's art isn't so bad) it just that its made to appeal to a wide audience obviously and tend to drag a lot

Try Cowboy Bebop.
"[...]I have to admit I'm not a big anime fan. Most anime that makes it over here seems to be either about schoolgirls with supernatural powers who battle evil, or adolescent boys who - for some convoluted reason - wind up having to pilot big giant robots...although, today, you just need to put some boobs or harem and fantasy and it'll be 10/10."

Just watched it, I really hated the art it was all over the place but it was definitely one of those animes that make you want them to succeed. Pretty good all around. Since there wasn't much plot it's kinda not considered a romance but they still managed to put some in.
