I've watched many sad Animes but only one made me cry truly which was Plastic Memories, that one is the best Anime ever made in my opinion, I started to watch it and I already knew how it was going to end but it was very depressing... It's been like 4 months since I watched it but whenever I remember it I feel bad (even by just listening to the ED)... But I still like these types of Animes because they are the only ones that mess up with my heart even knowing it's not real ;-;
So anything sad and depressing it's fine, it doesn't need to have romance but I would prefer if it has. Sorry for any errors and thx by the way!

One of the most prominent names in the genre in sad anime is Clannad, and by the looks of your list you have yet to see it!

Watch Clannad my friend, not only will you never forget it, but it will change you.

Byousoku 5 Centimeter - the artwork is beautiful and it compliments a very emotional story

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom - a rather violent story line of assassins and their quest for a normal life

Usually I stay away from sad endings but sometimes the story is just too good.....you just have to ride the "feels train".

That's b/c the first season of Clannad is a very cliché rom-com. It's somewhat enjoyable, but highly overrated due to the second season, After Story, that's so much better that it's laughable to compare the 2. It feels like a completely different anime, yet season one gives necessary back story for season 2.

Clannad itself isnt very sad but you need to get through clannad to get to the sad one which is clannad after story and let me tell you that one is in no way boring and very sad!!
Angel Beats is probably no.2 for sad (apparently its romance but I didnt see it??)

Watch "Ie Naki Ko" its a rather old anime but your gonna love it, However there is an alternative version with a better animation if you're the type of person who favors animation "Ie Naki Ko Remi".

Sad Anime? Oh this is easy.

Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso:

"Music accompanies the path of the human metronome, the prodigious pianist Kousei Arima. But after the passing of his mother, Saki Arima, Kousei falls into a downward spiral, rendering him unable to hear the sound of his own piano.

Two years later, Kousei still avoids the piano, leaving behind his admirers and rivals, and lives a colorless life alongside his friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari. However, everything changes when he meets a beautiful violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who stirs up his world and sets him on a journey to face music again."

Seconding Clannad, which you said you didn't like. (It takes until After Story to get depressing sad though)

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day:

"After a tragic accident during their childhood, Jinta and his group of friends split apart and live separate lives. Now in high school, the group is drawn together once more by an unknown force. Ano Hana, short for Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai (We Still Don’t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day), is a drama and slice of life anime series following the lives of these students and the friendship they once had, as they re-discover guilt, anger, friendship, happiness, and so much more."

Angel Beats!

"Otonashi awakens only to learn he is dead. A rifle-toting girl named Yuri explains that they are in the afterlife, and Otonashi realizes the only thing he can remember about himself is his name. Yuri tells him that she leads the Shinda Sekai Sensen (Afterlife Battlefront) and wages war against a girl named Tenshi. Unable to believe Yuri's claims that Tenshi is evil, Otonashi attempts to speak with her, but the encounter doesn't go as he intended."

Kanon (2006): (Might not make you cry, but it did for me because I'm a lil bitch)

"As a young child, Aizawa Yuuichi had often visited his cousin in the city; however, something drastic happened to keep him away for seven long years. Now, Yuuichi returns, his memories of those days are simply gone.

Settling into the wintry town, Yuuichi comes across several young girls, all of whom are connected to his past. As he befriends them and continues to interact with them, the long forgotten memories from his childhood begin to resurface..."

The world god only knows
[only sad on s3 though]
"Optimists will toss aside such disappointments as irregularities and anomalies;
Realists will always accept them as an inevitable part of life;
But cynics will hold on to them as proof that humans should be expected to act selfishly."

The sad animes I would recommend are
Ef: A Tale of Memories (Real emotional)
Clannad (Storygpivks up after 7 episode and gets emotional)
Clannad After Story (2nd season of Clannad and far most one of he best romantic and emotional animes there).

+1 Shinsekai Yori

Madoka Magika
Not romance. Its a magical girl anime, but it absolutely destroys the stereotype of what a magical girl anime is and had me crying. Especially with the 3rd movie. The 1st and 2nd movie is the first and second half's of the tv series.
