Even before the show revealed they were siblings I was interested in the similarities and differences of these two young ladies. They were both really amazing and their conflicting personalities were an interesting commentary on the role of parenting in child development.

It seems Ryuko wasn't close with her father as he was dedicated to his life's mission, and so had very little strong parenting. She has impulsiveness, lack of discipline and anger issues, exacerbated by the loss of her father. She is easily brainwashed and seduced by her biological mother towards the end of the series when her mom gives her a mental belief that she has been given everything a young woman could want (all the things she never had growing up).

Satsuki had both parents for a time, and even after she thought her father was gone, she still had her mother's guidance. At a young age she had the judgment to understand her father was good and her mother wicked. She had the discipline to put an elaborate 13 year plan of opposition and revenge into action. She learned from her mother and took every trait from her that was beneficial and discarded what was harmful. I noted that she never truly humiliated or harmed ryuko or her elite 4 when they failed or if she had the chance. She built them up and encouraged them to new heights. She had the wisdom to see that she would need their strength, and in her own emotionally stunted way (due to her upbringing) she showed respect and love for them. This is all coming from her own inner wisdom and strength, things she could never have learned from ragyo.

Satsuki suffered lifelong mental and sexual abuse at the hands of ragyo, yet She maintained outward discipline and good appearances while she took advantage of the resources at her disposal and inwardly plotted her revenge. Ragyo's brainwashing and tortures did not break her. She never fell into self pity or doubt as ryuko did upon discovering her human alien nature. When ryuko went off the reservation towards the end of the series, Satsuki did whatever was needed to bring her back. She showed adaptability and flexibility in her worldview, allying with and basically becoming a member of nudist beach, which allowed her to achieve her goals. Conversely, ryuko fell into ragyo's snares and allied with the enemy.

Ryuko is ultimately more powerful than Satsuki and indispensable to be sure. She has inner fire and dogged perseverance to add to her genetics. But I would say it is Satsuki who has lived a life of self sacrifice, stoicism, wisdom, leadership and heroism. She is the character I most admire in the series.

Both were really good at sticking to their character strengths. Satsuki was better in the planning department, but Ryuko's stubbornness is also worthy of note. Ryuko landed the finishing blow, but I will have to go with..........Nudist Beach as being the biggest heroes because they had no kamuis yet risked themselves.
