Which episode are you on right now?
He become a God in the Dressrosa Arc because he beat one of the most important figure on the enemy side without even lifting a finger.

in order:
1- He saved all the people that were transformed in toys, many had been slaving away for years, other barely minutes but it was still hell. Most of them had no hope of ever transforming back.
2- After winning, a giant picks him up to show him to the people he just saved. At some point, the underground's roof gets a bit destroyed when sabo makes a hole in the coliseum which is just above. That hole allows some "heaven-like light" to shine on Usopp, making the stupid pirates he saved think they were witnessing a miracle, and so they named their savior God Usopp. (These guys must be related to the one that joined Buggy in Impel Down, there's no other way...)
3- Because of the pain, he could barely talked when he was hold up in the air, and the people misinterpreted what he said to something along the line of "I'm here to guide you", like a messiah would say...

There!
It was a pretty fun passage, and then somehow even Doflamingo uses the name...

Hmmm it wasn't actually played as a comedy, but I guess.
Well that was "only" like 40 episodes ago, meaning it's only been a few hours in the OP world... (and no this is not even sarcasm, I mean it...).
I think it made Luffy laugh and Zoro being himself not caring. I'm not sure about Robin, she seemed a bit shocked/impressed but who knows.

But as above, why don't you just watch it?

Also, putting Usopp himself aside, it eventually gained Luffy the aid of various strong pirates that Usopp had just saved. Pretty much they feel indebted to Usopp, and with Usopp "working" under Luffy, they are indebted to Luffy...

Law start calling him "God" instead of "long nose" after that incident.
His bounty shot up into 200 Million thanks to that incident.
And Franky kind of jelly to him brcause his bounty didn't even reach 100 Million.
