humans don't seem to have much of a problem with killing ants and flies. but does anyone understand why this is?

is it because they're small? if so, wouldn't that make killing a human that was 1 cm tall okay?
is it because they have large populations? because there's an awful lot of humans too and it's not socially acceptable to kill them yet.
is it because they're not as intelligent? I mean, this just seems invalid because we're not yet intelligent enough to understand exactly how smart these insects are.
is it because they're annoying? I would be okay with justifying murders because "he was being really annoying."
or is it just because they're not humans?

I don't understand.

discuss.

I think most scientific research tends to support the idea that the nervous system of an insect in too inferior for them to develop any significant level of phenomenology. If you're approaching this from a philosophical perspective though, that's a whole different story.

science is a branch of philosophy. Science simply attempts to prove things empirically but does not necessarily give a universal code for how things work, while philosophy does the opposite I.E. Democritus vs. John Dalton. Furthermore, phenomenology is a philosophical topic in the first place. Saying the nervous system contributes to having consciousness implies that sentience creates consciousness, which is impossible to prove.
Even if the bugs did not have consciousness and were nothing more than inanimate objects, what then makes killing things with consciousness so bad?

Great topic!

It's just I think insects are way below anything. I don't like them. I have no feelings for them. I don't care if they die. I don't feel that their lives are meaningful.

Until we can show that they have any part of humanistic traits like compassion or something, I won't ever feel guilty killing them.

Yeah, it's hypocritical when you think about the counter arguments you stated in your OP, but y'know.. I just DON'T CARE.
Now I see the secret of the making of the best persons.
It is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth.
-Walt Whitman

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

If you kill an insect will you be punished? No. There population allows for many of them to die without hindering their survival. If you kill an insect will it have serious consequences? No. There is not enough concern from us, humans, who are the primary source of compassion on the earth, to care. If you allow an insect to live will it have serious consequences? No. As there are millions just like it and many more being born to take its place.

We as humans are larger, stronger, smarter, faster, live longer, and possess the ability to either support or destroy entire species including our own. Insects for the most part know/do nothing other than what their instincts and environment influence them to. If you put one in a bowl that's impossible to climb they will not realize it and continue trying until they're unable to. If you kill one insect in front of another it will not care. Insects basically do nothing other than focus on survival within their physical limits which restricts them and ultimately makes them bound to evolution. Of course humans are similar, but we can focus on things outside and beyond survival and evolution which can benefit not only us, but other living beings as well. No other animal can seemingly do this to our extent.

Though, there's also the fact death surrounds us constantly whether we can see it or not. With each breath you take or step you place you're killing something whether it be microbes or insects. It's unavoidable and you're programmed for survival so as long as it doesn't have consequences regarding that fact they cease to be important to us as they're destruction is due to being weak compared to us.

Killing things with consciousness feels bad because human brain has the ability to feel empathy, why do we have empathy in first place? it's probably because we are a sociable specie and knowing how others feels helps at socializing, why do we feel empathy for others species? because is useful. Just look at horses and dogs they had a BIG role in human evolution.
