He's doing Liberal Arts. Not sure if he chose it for Yukino. Pretty sure he didn't.

The LN gives more insight.
His father is a lawyer so he's going for Liberal Arts to succeed him.
That's why he said this in episode 11.

If I chose something because I had no other choice, I couldn't call it my own decision

Are you serious? Its not like that, He did it for Hachiman HayotoxHachiman. he just dont want to follow on what Hachiman advised thats why he picked arts

Nothing shows frustration like a shipper denied :-)

No, it was always going to be Liberal Arts, that was why he was so insistent in not telling anyone.

He did not want them to make a choice based on his choice, because his choice was not based on what was necessarily right for him, but rather because he was living up to his parent's expectations (I have a feeling Hayama would have preferred Science).

This is why he didn't want to tell people and was so insistent that they figure what they wanted out for themselves. There are two reasons:
1) He felt he would betray his friends expectations of him (in that they would have respected his decision, but Hayama would know it wasn't really his decision, and as such he wasn't worth that respect)
2) He envied their decision to be able to choose for themselves, a choice he was denied.

Hachiman gave him an out. Hachiman gave Hayama a legitimate personal reason to pick Liberal Arts (more so than denying Hachiman, Hachiman made choosing science seem a petty, selfish reason on Hayama (to get away from the girls)), which allowed Hayama to both live up to the expectations of others, yet also have a measure of rational thought and self-respect in doing so.

That this is what happens is shown by what follows next. After this exchange Hachiman then said "sorry about causing you to lose the race", so once again he gave Hayama a personal reason to want to win (instead of winning because everyone "expected" him to win), Hayama did then win it on his own desire, which made it worth more to him and this raising of his self pride allowed him to be able to sincerely thank Miura and Iroha.

The only question about what happened is: why did Hachiman know to pick science? It was a guess, but one based on certain facts Hachiman learned: Haruno saying that Yukino should know, because of Miura, but mostly because I think he figured out that Hayato was picking the one he didn't want to because of his family, and that would mean LA.

So in short the marathon was an analogy for Hayama's decision. Hachiman's skill with Hayama is that he can turn the choices Hayama into something more nobler than Hayama just living up to other's expectations. So ironically, Hachiman is forcing Hayama to an even higher standard, which is forcing Hayama into having to raise his own judgment of himself.

Hayama knows this very well, which is why he says he hates Hachiman (who likes someone who puts more pressure on you), but of course that is a lie, Hachiman is forcing Hayama into being the person that everyone thinks he is, but whom Hayama didn't believe he was.

Which come to think of it, is what Hachiman has been doing with Yui and Yukino. He sees Yui as nice (Yui doesn't), he sees Yukino as being strong (she thinks she is weak), but he is forcing both of them to live up to his standard, and in doing so he is making them genuine. Of course they are doing the same to him, which is what platonic love is about.

You may be overthinking the situation a bit. Switching majors in Japanese university is not as trivial as filling out a form at your college office and there will be exams or additional applications involved. Picking science also means a path to medicine (which is not a postbac course like the US). For someone undecided, it probably does make more sense to pick the sciences than liberal arts.

Well, it might just be a mistranslation, but Hachiman said "Choose Sciences." EVEN if Hayato chose Science Hayato would have probably accidentally said something like "I don't have to." Which can indicate that he chose Sciences.

Don't overthink this one too much honestly.
