I buy DVDs of my favorite shows; the problem is there has not been anything recently which I think is worth purchasing and re-watching. The last such show for me was Steins;Gate.

Also, I have a subscription to crunchyroll, which in my country means I get 5 shows per season, which is really sad.

So, I do what I can, but I am in no position to support getting more anime that I like, since there are very few I genuinely like recently and they are not readily available.

I can't watch every Anime on Crunchyroll so I'm paying for Crunchyroll + a DNS-Service every month to "enjoy" Crunchyroll and support the industrie.

Would buy BluRays as well but they are really expensive in my country.

I agree.

But the problem is that Japanese just don't want to make their products accessible for the west.

I can't support Uchouten Kazoku or Shin Sekai Yori if I can't even get my hands on it without paying bullshit just for the import fees

^ Pretty much the problem.

I support the industry where I can, with some DVDs, Blu-rays, t-shirts, etc.
I do a much better job supporting light novels anymore, Yen Press is a godsend, and they should get most of my money.

If the show is great, I purchase the Blu ray/DVD. What is frustrating about the industry to me right now, is the American disc release schedules. Japanese pricing is also outrageous on some titles..

They released Shin Sekai Yori here in the US recently in sub and dub. However, they changed the subtitles to suit American audiences - kind of pissed me off.

PS - the dub was bad, I only watch the subtitle version..

Anime is the medium begging most for piracy as it's so ridiculously expensive and overpriced.
Would I buy the complete Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (3 sets) for the retail price of 204 USD (~68 USD x3) just because I rated it a 9/10? No way in hell.

The Japanese apparently doesn't care much for the west, and thus, I don't care much for them.

Besides, was there really any more people buying anime back in like 2004-2005? Then we got shows like Death Note, Gankutsuou, Mushishi and Monster.

What we can see from this (check spoiler) is that a lot of the countries here are in fact poor! Why would anyone in their right mind who lives in, let's say Thailand, buy something that costs 204 USD simply because they enjoyed it through a streaming service or anything of that nature?

I had to buy the DVD version because that was a bit too high for me, but I think its reasonably priced for US. For poorer countries, what is that, like a $500 purchase?

I wrote a detailed post about this here

I feel like the main problem was that the Japanese companies are lagging behind towards the shift of consumption of digital media.

More importantly is that profits will only go to them if they themselves set up "Netflix" for anime kind of websites or else crunchyroll eats everything.

It think they have already kinda given up with optical media for personal entertainment because they are realising 4k movies on the same 50GB blu ray discs meaning they will look shit.

Anime is good, fucking deal with it.

I buy discs whenever possible, but these days Aniplex is breaking the bank. I have no issues with any of the other distributors. I have some Aniplex titles but they are in DVD -.- It would be great if they introduced a stripped down budget Blu-ray line.

I thought long and hard about this but honestly I believe in 20 years, media will be video files and streaming. At some point, I believe the pitch is going to be a video file will last longer than a disc. And if the current video file formats can not out last a disc than I am sure special storage will be developed for consumers. I also think they will crack down on piracy eventually. Just my predictions / opinion.

I'm about to finish buying Aniplex's Kill La Kill Blu-Ray sets, do I have the right to complain yet?
