[click pic for actual size]

It's easily one of my favorite stuff to do, but I haven't found a good tutorial for this... I usually just use scattering brushes and give them glow, but there's not one way to do it.

Do you know any more efficient methods making a beautiful fire sparks, or something like the flower petals applied in the 2nd pic above?

hmmm... all I could think about is that you should make a brush pipe with different brushes ( something like, circles which differentiate in size and opacity.)

and about the flower petals on the 2nd pic, just duplicate the layer (assuming you applied the brushes on a single layer), and then just simply use a blur tool.

Not really a tutorial, but I would just make the spark shapes on a new layer with a hard edged brush set to 100% opacity (with white, or some very light color). Then use the magic wand to select the space around em all, inverse selection, and make a new layer. Then fill the selection with whatever color you want the sparks to be on the new layer. Then gaussian blur that layer. Gaussian blur your original layer to, but to a lesser degree. Then drag the original layer over the new layer.

Don't overdo the blurring though, since I find that it makes it looks kind of assy (IMO, of course).

Dunno if this is the fastest or easiest way to do it (might be frustrating since you don't have a tablet yet (You don't have one yet right?)). But that's how I would do it. That's how I heavily suspect the Shana one was done anyway.

As for the Miku one, the "glowing aura" look seems to vary from place to place. Some places it almost seems just a hard edged shape. Others, it is glowing bright as hell. You can follow most of the steps I described above, but stop before any of the blurring happens. Then, whip out your blur brush or tool or whatever you call it, and hit some areas more than others.

As for the petals, well, I think that was done with a custom brush. I don't really know too much about making brushes, but I suspect it was just a bunch of petal shapes loosely put together onto a brush. Then, the person set the spacing on the brush to a relatively wide spacing, and hit it with the angle jitter. Take this last paragraph with a grain of salt since I don't really know for sure or anything.

Oh yes, and a tablet might be required for the petal thing.

Thanks for all the input guys. I remember wasn't there a way to make those glowing sparks sticks to a path created by pen tool?
