Leaving aside that people can like others for their personality instead of their looks or that some people go for looks that aren't "perfectly androgynous", I doubt that many people get so engrossed with their porn that it affects their real life.

I hope you're not looking for pointy-chin, nippleless men in real life. You'll have a hard time.

Do you feel that the genre sets you up to never find someone to your liking in real life ? Considering that guys, in reality, barring rare exceptions (1% of the male population at the very most), aren't the perfectly androgynous and handsome male characters that you find in massive amounts in yaoi.

I may not be understanding your question here, but are you asking whether or not yaoi will compare to real life?
If that's the case, you won't get those types of people in real life like you would in yaoi.
The characters aren't made like that for no reason.

So, people watch/read Okane ga Nai, Wild Rock, Under (xGround) Grand Hotel, etc. for the story?

I think that the same happens to girls who constantly watch romance, and I'm not just referring to anime, although it's essentially the same thing in most mediums of entertainment...
Plain girl with not extraordinary qualities manages to woo this dark, mysterious attractive guy and he loves her unconditionally and "treats her like a princess". Almost all the girls I know love things like this since they can relate to the heroine, and I think that by doing so they build up very high, unrealistic expectations for a future partner hoping one day that someone will love them like these girls in the stories are loved.

Yaoi is generally just gay porn though, I think shounen-ai would suit the question you are trying to ask much better.

I'm pretty sure not everyone is attracted to androgynous and "handsome" males.

I do not know. You would have to ask the people in question.

In my experience yaoi can be anything from almost no pornographic content (say the odd masturbation scene in an otherwise 500 page long story) to a ratio of about 3/4 story, 1/4 sex... If it were really porn you were looking for, you'd be much better served with hentai, where 9 pages out of 10 are made up of straight up hardcore sex.

Endless movies contain sex scenes (hence the existence of ratings other than the 18+ reserved for pron) and it would never occur to you to call them porn.

Yaoi generally refers to a genre of porn. Shounen-ai is what you probably thinking about.

Doubtless taking expectations from bishie-filled BL and applying them to real life is a generally terrible idea, especially considering that, for the most part, gay interaction like it would happen in shounen-ai would probably be looked down upon in a real life context.

Shounen Ai doesn't mean what you think it means.

It means love for little boys and has pedophilic connotations in japan.

Thats why people say yaoi and yuri.

Hence why myanimelist is filled with retards who constantly misuse and mislabel genre tags trying too hard to be japanese.

As I always say: Yaoi has no correlation with actual homosexuality as far as I'm concerned. It's a HIGHLY fetishized genre like futanari that has no basis in reality.
I probably regret this post by now.

Myanimelist people say Shounen-Ai meaning love between boys, but the actual meaning is love for young boys.

Its the same with shoujo-ai.

The reason people here don't want to say Yaoi or Yuri is because people on mal have this weird distaste for anything even remotely sexualized.

I hate when people try to imply that sexual theming is immature whenever a large part of being an adult is accepting the presence of libido in your daily life.

As far as I can google, yaoi and yuri carry sexual connotations while shounen/shoujo-ai is more pg-13, nothing about pedophilia. Are you saying the Internet is wrong?!!!

I always understood shounen/shoujo-ai to be the kind of more 'innocent' kind, if you know what I mean. The lighthearted stuff, as opposed to the potentially more explicit yaoi/yuri.

But apparently not, according to submerged!Setsuna up there :/

Shounen/Shoujo-ai is what people on myanimelist call yaoi/yuri without sexual contact.

It's just like how people on myanimelist call fanservice Ecchi, even though the fucking word Ecchi is just a play on how Japanese People say H.

Ecchi literally means Hentai.

Thankyou for that irrelevant tidbit of information.
And in the strictest sense, ecchi "literally" means H.
Just H, like the transliteration of the consonant.

Considering I've heard that meaning for the term ''-ai elsewhere, then clearly the alternative meaning must have gained steam from somewhere that isn't here.

Believe it or not, Myanimelist is not a standard by which to determine the meanings of japanese idioms.

If you go around saying the dumb shit people say here it will make you look like an idiot.

By all means, within the confines of mal, when someone says shounen-ai they mean Boys Love, but simply creating an "in" way of speaking for this website doesnt completely change the meaning of the actual idiom.

Well, if yaoi is the only knowledge you have when it comes to sex... you're probably going to expect to be fucking some whiny 20 year old guy who sounds like a 12 year old and complains that he doesn't like it for years on end but takes it in the ass either way. (Junjou Romantica)

I like yaoi, but too bad at least 90% of it is trash... I'm starting to see that manga does it better though, I read a 5 chapter manga that totally blew Junjou Romantica out of the water which was 26 damn episodes and left me wanting to kill somebody at the end.

I still go back to my initial comment.

It's not just yaoi. It's not just anime/manga. All fictional romance is overly dramatic and (go figure) fictitious.

You wont ever find romance in real life that excludes the mundane parts of normal life, because real life doesn't edit out the boring or uncomfortable parts.

And when did I insinuate that it was?

I do distinctly remember saying that I have indeed heard that meaning for *insert flavour of the day-ai here* elsewhere, so pointing out that using one site as a reference for an idiom is, again, irrelevant to the topic at hand. So attempting to derive semantics from something you believed I said is a fallacy at best.

Your post is riddled with incorrect punctuation and grammar. You really shouldn't slap a bunch of thick wording into your posts if you don't structure your sentences correctly.

And back to the initial point of the thread, it is possible to find somewhat similar romance to the shit in anime but it would probably be superficial and short lived.

So you start decrying syntactically and lexically correct, if slightly running, sentences as 'incorrect' in an attempt to dislodge me. Congratulations.

Considering your sole remaining counter-argument is an ad hominem with little argumentative value, I'd say that attempting to continue arguing would be pointless.

I take back my first post in this thread, you seem completely focused on the sexual side of things.

And there's something wrong with that?

I guess the OP should be a pure and mature anime fan like yourself.

These aren't just cartoons. This is serious shit here that determines your entire personality.

Where did I say there is anything wrong with it?

Well, if yaoi is the only knowledge you have when it comes to sex... you're probably going to expect to be fucking some whiny 20 year old guy who sounds like a 12 year old and complains that he doesn't like it for years on end but takes it in the ass either way. (Junjou Romantica)

I like yaoi, but too bad at least 90% of it is trash... I'm starting to see that manga does it better though, I read a 5 chapter manga that totally blew Junjou Romantica out of the water which was 26 damn episodes and left me wanting to kill somebody at the end.

Yaoi anime = kiss > denial > rape > denial > rape > rape > denial > rape > rape > denial

sighs. This reminds me of this one terrible tumblr posts that has the exact same type of topic tittle saying how someone loves it. Which I'm not going to post it here, but ugh so terrible on how someone loves it like that.
Is this the one where a girl talked about how she wished that she was a gay man since "their love is so pure"?

Sorta, but here's a link. Warning it will shake your head too much about this wonderful post......

Wow, that was gold. I like how she uses her age as support
She's eleven and she started yaoi when she was ten, and is trying to say she's an "expert"
Plus that nine year old part. I lost it.
That amount of fangirl is scary. Wouldn't want to meet her in person

That HAD to be a troll.

"gay porn is disgusting. It's nothing like yaoi and it's unrealistic" and then the total give-away : "The ukes are usually not even shorter than the seme."

11 year old girl ? My ass. 35 year old unemployed neckbeard seems more realistic.

It was still a great read. Even if it was fake.
Either way, it wouldn't be surprising it is one of the two considering how tumblr rolls

Well the only reason I started watching yaoi was because a friend of mine said that my relationship with my boy friend was like a yaoi (I told her how we got together, its a long story so i wont talk about it) and she was right, its pretty much the same (i only watched romantica and hatsukoi) the only thing that is not the same is that they don't prepare before they make love, they just do it whenever they want but in real life if two guys want to do it they gotta do a few preparations before they do the deed. Well my relationship might just be a special case probably because i thought he (my boyfriend) was a girl when i first met him so i'm not sure about other people.
