I haven't had amnesia before or knew anyone who did. So what I'm actually wondering about is the possibility of reverting back to your old memories. Won't you just remember them rather than forget all of the memories you just created?

Ya regaining your old memories + memories would pretty much be how it goes. If you regained your old memories and then lost your new ones, that would mean you still had amnesia.

But I don't think anything past episode 20 is cannon.

If you have split personalities then yes it's possible to not remember anything Personality B/C/D and so forth was doing. But amnesia caused by physical damage like in Bari's case, I highly doubt it. Which is why the whole drama about the new Banri being over-written by the old Banri is plain ridiculous.

"May those who defy their fate be granted glory."

I don't have amnesia but I have repressed memories...I had a concussion and I can't remember what exactly happened...basically woke up and asked what happened...i doubt amnesia would ever cause split personality o.o

I think it is possible. A lot of strange things are possible with memories and stuff, as I have learned in psych.

Angelshiva that's true , but that is not what happened to Banri at all. After the accident he was pretty capable of making new memories with 2d kun , Oka , Yana and koko . The thing that happened to Banri is not possible . The anime made it complicating . When u suffer amnesia after an accident , u won't remember what happened to u before but u can make new memories and remember those . Once your old memories do come back , the new ones will not disappear . However u might experience some anxiety like Banri did as u are learning and discovering things about yourself. Things u might actually not like. :) answer is no. What tada Banri had is not possible

Yes, it is possible.

Dissociative amnesia results from a psychological cause as opposed to direct damage to the brain caused by head injury, physical trauma or disease, which is known as organic amnesia. Dissociative amnesia can include:
  1. Repressed memory refers to the inability to recall information, usually about stressful or traumatic events in persons' lives, such as a violent attack or disaster. The memory is stored in long-term memory, but access to it is impaired because of psychological defense mechanisms. Persons retain the capacity to learn new information and there may be some later partial or complete recovery of memory. Formerly known as "Psychogenic Amnesia".
  2. Dissociative fugue (formerly psychogenic fugue) is also known as fugue state. It is caused by psychological trauma and is usually temporary, unresolved and therefore may return. An individual with dissociative fugue disorder is unaware or confused about his or her identity and will travel in journeys away from familiar surroundings to discover or create new identities.[17] The Merck Manual defines it as " one or more episodes of amnesia in which patients cannot recall some or all of their past and either lose their identity or form a new identity. The episodes, called fugues, result from trauma or stress. Dissociative fugue often manifests as sudden, unexpected, purposeful travel away from home."[18] While popular in fiction, it is extremely rare.
  3. Posthypnotic amnesia occurs when events during hypnosis are forgotten, or where past memories are unable to be recalled. The failure to remember those events is induced by suggestions made during the hypnosis.[19]
