Seems my suggestion was deleted in the crash : (
Too bad, there were soo many good discussions. Post again if you want to ^^

My suggestion was to have MAL automatically look through your anime list and find related anime (prequels, sequels, OVAs, specials) that you haven't seen yet. In chronological order would be nice, as someone mentioned.

Someone also suggested that when you finish an anime that it give you the option of "watch for related anime" and it will message you when a new anime that is related to it shows up <- or something like that.
There were a few other suggestions that I can't quite remember yet.

Related in what way? Genre, Tags, Plot?

This would be a bit difficult to program and probably very CPU intensive unless you manage it statically.

No, sequels, OVAs, specials. Things actually related to the series in question.

I'd really like to see this option as some things have specials (or so called specials/OVAs on this site) that I was never aware of, so finding a list of things related to series I have completed, but aren't on my list, would be brilliant.

The coding is already there, mostly. A series entry already has related stuff linked to it, so it's just a matter of polling them. 'course on large lists it could get intensive, so maybe just have it as a job that runs periodically.

Except when the relations creator didn't tick the vice-versa box and the relations only go one way. I don't even understand why that box is even there, shouldn't all relations go both ways?

Anyway, I'd like this but I'd like franchise pages more. That would be more useful in the long run, I believe.

@Asako; thanks, I forgot to explain what I meant by "related anime"
@kuroshiroi; do you have an example of franchise pages?

Well, if you don't understand what I mean with a franchise page it would basically be a list like this:

Zero no Tsukaima
- Season 1
- Season 2
- Season 3
-- Season 3 Beach OVA

Then on the same page we would have... I don't know, franchise reviews, all the characters in all of the entries etc. but that would just be gravy.

A collection of links to all the entries with a timeline and/or relationships would be plenty.

This would be awesome, especially if you can just add a franchise to your list to take up one entry as opposed to them (eg. the above) taking up four. I'd much rather have just say, "Slayers" and "ZnT" and "Aria" etc franchise entries, as opposed to having a few different series/OVAs/movies as separate entries bloating out my list.

I never thought of that, that would be really nice to have. But it sounds like it might be confusing if you have seen one season but not the others.

Edit: hm... I guess you can have the franchise page as a kind of extension of your anime list and it shows which season you've watched, how many eps, etc.

Edit: this would be a great idea to use if MAL had an option of searching through your list because instead of going through every entry, it could go through just the franchise pages and find what you haven't seen.

I'm loving this idea more and more :D ; my completed list would drop from 266 to about 164

I support the auto-find, but not the franchise pages. Each anime season by itself already has a pretty big page with reviews, suggested anime, subs, discussion, characters, etc., so a franchise page would get pretty big. Also, story archs and whatnot get different ratings/reviews for each season, and each should be represented by itself on your anime list. The related prequels, sequels, OVAs, and specials however would be very useful. =)

I'm not sure what asako and kuroshiroi think of for franchise pages, but this is what I'm thinking (pretend that the background isn't messed up :P ):

@ji_hyun_jun; I wouldn't put reviews, suggested anime, subs, discussion, etc., ( but maybe characters for all seasons like kuroshiroi said ) on the franchise page for the reasons you said, and because the anime have their own separate page for that already, no need to change IMO.

Don't get me wrong, no pages would be deleted or merged. This would just be something extra. Franchise reviews would not be a bad idea IMO because, let's face it, sometimes franchises go bad and some people might not want to watch the first season and then find out the second season is crap. But as I said, a simple link list with relations and a timeline would be plenty and it would declutter our lists.

Actually programming this is the hard part ^^

oh, i see what you're saying. that'd be an interesting idea. although maybe for franchises in your completed list, i think you should be able to expand the franchise to see all series in that franchise in your list (think of the franchise name being a spoiler button). i personally would prefer to be able to see each completed series on my list over than having just the franchise appear there, but the spoiler tag sort of idea would allow both of these to happen. =)
