The age premise makes no sense, the veterans of AW would be 7 or 8 when they started.

I like this show, think its better than SAO, but one thing that bugs me is the age restriction. By making the oldest gamer max out at fifteen, it just makes the whole premise sound ridiculous when characters like Kurohime claim to have been playing for 7 plus years. That would make her 7 when the game started.

Realistically most kids dont really start playing games until they are around 10, and most don't get as good as some of these characters are until mid teens or later. If you look at all the pro gamers they are all in their late teens.

I just can't buy the timeline and think he shot himself in the foot, at least if the oldest gamers were 20-21 it would border on realistic, but combined with the strategy and various factors that go into this game, its just not realistic to have one gamer on the level of a king let alone 6-8.

And so? That's not too young. Sure, at the start, there would be a lot of fumbles and figuring things out. But remember that time passes differently in the Accelerated World. A year or two in our world, is thousands of years in the AW. Thus, the kids would have rapidly aged "mentally" and become more knowledgable, learned, and mature. Not totally, since ultimately they still have the brains of teenagers. But they would have grown up quite fast.

I didn't think about the accelerated part, so I guess mentally they are older. But I still think 7-8 is too young to start realistically.

As I said, possibly. I know kids that start gaming even younger than that. Sure, most of them aren't very good, but some are. So while the kids might not have been very good at first, they would have learned. And aged. And gained experience. It took five years for even a few players to even hit the lv9 limit. Haru, in contrast as someone who started when they were older, has already hit lv5 after a few months. Chiyu is lv4. Granted, they have some special circumstances, but it just goes to show how much quicker an older kid can pick things up. The 7-8 year olds were really kids at it. They just had the advantage of time.

There are also some hints that not all of the BB players are kids in that range. For instance, Black Vise sounds much older than what he is supposed to be, and there are questions about the originators (the first 100 who got the program).

This is theorizing, but it is also something that the light novels(and anime) make your think about: What is the purpose of Brain Burst? The whole goal is to meet the developer and find out. Throughout the light novels, there are several conversations on the requirements to use brain burst, the kind of kids it seeks out, the relationships that form as a consequence... and the characters conclude it was a very well-put-together program, almost seemingly designed to find particular types of kids (ie, traumatized ones).

Last fun fact: The AW has been in existence for 7000 years. Of course, not every player has been logged in for the entirety of that time, but even a small fraction means they are at least several decades old mentally.

You're forgetting the first condition for installing Brain Burst: a person should be wearing the Neuro Linker since birth. The Neuro Linker came out on 2031 and the Brain Burst program came out on 2039. That's why only 7-8 years old are able to install it.
It's also supportive to the Duel Avatars born out of the pains of the children's hearts as NLs are given to newborns to monitor their health. FullDives can also be performed by parents, thereby lessening physical contact and creating loneliness for the children. Teenagers and adults won't be able to make a DA without scars like these if they didn't wear the NLs since birth.

Also, not all of the veterans are still around. Around 80% of the Originators left due to losing points and consequently BB, so it's not like they breezed through playing it. As mentioned above, due to the acceleration, they can learn quickly too.

Look I realize its a light novel/manga/anime, so anything is possible, I am just saying its far fetched and with no reason to it as well.

Even if he wanted to eliminate an adult factor he still could have adjusted the ages to earliest bb being in late teens or early twenties, that would not really have changed the story, could have kept out a more authoritative group like adults, and made more sense on a gaming scale. I just don't get what his goal is with the ages?

The main reason, and the same reason most anime protagonists are in the teen range, is because that is the age range that the genre is targeted at. Kids and teens want to read about hero kids and teens, because it is easier to connect with them and fantasize that it could happen to them.

But I think you're overthinking this a bit much. There are some really good kid gamers out there, and BB is unlike any of our games. Still, a full 80% of the original kids to get it have since lost BB. That makes sense, if you figure that most kids wouldn't be that good, but it accounts for the small percentage that were. And then you do have older kids that come along, and the originals have spent so much time that they are very good now, and it all makes sense. Like natural selection and evolution, the ones that remained are the good ones.

I get your point. I am over thinking it somewhat.

Although I will say that generally the characters are in the late teens ie High School, but the characters in SAO also start out as 14 so at least he is consistent.
