As stated in the title, don't continue reading if you don't want the show to be spoiled.

So I just finished Clannad After Story Episode 22 and I'm a bit confused, even after reading some really great interpretations of the story in other forums.

So my first question is, near the start it shows Tomoya back in the moment when he first met Nagisa, but he decides utterly to not meet her, since he believes that he is the cause for her suffering.

However, at the end of Ep. 21 he either fainted or died (not sure how he would have died). How did he end up from that point, to going back in time?

Secondly, it's only until the illusionary world is destroyed and Tomoya's illusionary presence returns to the real world that he decides instead to yell Nagisa's name and meet her. What about Tomoya's illusionary self returning to him would cause him to change his mind?

I find this particular scene very confusing because both Tomoya and Nagisa are both in that moment in time with memories of the future (the whole story presented to us in the earlier episodes).

After Tomoya hugs Nagisa, I expect at this point that no change in the flow of time would have occurred. In other words, Nagisa would still have died and also Ushio. I'm not sure what changes the fate this time. Is it some additional knowledge that either of them now have due to having lived that experience already? Also, what was with the weird gray distorted scenes that happened after they hugged? Some blue glowing lights appear on the screen as well as what appears to be the first-person view of someone walking through buildings, streets, etc. I'm not really sure what this is supposed to represent. During that scene, you hear the Illusionary Ushio speak: "Would you like me to take you? To a place in this city where wishes come true.", then you hear the joined voices of both Tomoya's say "It's coming to an end...The long, long journey...". After that, all of a sudden, Tomoya wakes up next to Nagisa after having given birth to Ushio.

AFAIK, 22 is the official ending and the last 2 are extras. Anyway... "magic fixes everything" isn't necessarily the explanation I was looking for. Perhaps I chose the wrong community to post my question, sorry for that.

We're being serious, OP. THERE'S NOT A LOGICAL REASON WHY WHAT HAPPENED TOOK PLACE, it's supernatural for a reason. It's for the sake of having a good happy ever after ending.

But even supernatural events can be explained, at least in this respect. My assumption is that the plot was intended to have some definition and comprehension and that I'm simply "missing the point", so I'm looking to make sure I'm not missing any points. I never asked for it to make logical sense.

^^^^^

And it's a big reason why I didn't like Clannad AS as much as Clannad season 1.

The other was the simple fact that it was utterly depressing and I took away very little enjoyment in seeing it.

The ending was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen (IMO).

As silversaint already mentioned, the orbs were the only links between reality and the supernatural world. These orbs are somehow able to grant wishes if one touches one and Tomoya was thus able to wish Nagisa to be alive.

It's been awhile, but perhaps someone could elaborate. Beyond that, once the orb/wish bit takes place, there's nothing really of it to make 'sense'.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

To be fair anime logic is better than hentai and doujin logic.

I mean seriously....things on that side of the spectrum are insane.

Pretty much.
Though, it lacks the melo/keydrama, which I admittedly liked (what a sucker I am).

Apologies but what are "Key Stories"?

Also I realize the light orbs are the reason, they granted his wish (although he did not explicitly wish it, I think it was more based on his desires to keep his family alive) to keep Nagisa alive. The thing is, his first time through this passage of time, he was collecting the orbs. They did show up several times, even in Season 1. However, Nagisa still died. During episode 22 he goes back in time, back to season 1 episode 1. Nagisa doesn't die that time. Did he simply have more orbs that time? Not sure about that part lol.

Yes but the first pass through the story, he helped out Nagisa's friends as well (First Fuko, then Kotomi, etc). So if perhaps he carried over his deeds into the 2nd pass of the same story, thus doubling his count, then I'd understand... but perhaps I'm making it too logical at this point.

I think the point of the entire story was to accept that some things will be mysterious (specifically, how the "magic" part worked). But at least we understand that they were brought back because of that magic, and that his initial experience of those hardships was necessary to not only understand what to wish for but to acquire the prerequisites to have that wish fulfilled.

On my 1st watch of this series , i didnt understand a thing at all.Maybe it was coz that i was too focused on being a crybaby and shed litres of tear.

But right now , i finished my 2nd time and i understood the mistery of the final.

When Tomoya helps people with their issues throught the 1st episode to the last like , Fu-chan , Kotomi , Misae-san and his cat , Furukawa parents (when Nagisa learned the truth about their dreams) , Miyazawa-san etc. etc....Each time he helped them to solve their life , their happiness("legends say that , when someone in this city becomes really happy , an orb light appears and only some special people can be able to see themIf you can touch them , a wish of yours can be true) gave him their blessing/best wishes a.k.a light orbs...Even his dad which was the biggest one since he actually touched it with his chest and actually absorbed it.

As the Ushio from the ending world told , "They might be a small ball of lights but when they are together , they can shine in bright" or somethin like that....So yes , single orb wasnt enough to give him his wish to bring back his beloved girls and be a real family but when all orbs he was gathering through given by his friends together , and when he also added his will to be with Nagisa no matter what happens even if its death ,(going back in time to "1st time met" scene) , and finally the collapse/ending including the release of all wishes aka light orbs on other world , was able to handle that wish and make it come true.Meeanwhile , making everybodys' wishes and dreams come true ofcourse ( part where the snaps of everybody one by one showing them having their dreams alive)

Also for people telling and asking about unrealistic , magical ending , WHERE WERE YOU AND YOUR MAGIC QUESTIOINS AT THE BEGINING ON "GHOST FUKO" ARC?!?
