As the title says, really just a dark and gloomy anime having to do with war, and the horror it brings, anime's similiar to Rainbow are really what I'm looking for. Thanks all.

Try Tears to Tiara. Just give it a shot

Gungrave will definitely interest you if you liked Rainbow. You should resume watching it, unless you didn't like it derp.

Try out Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles. It's based on the ps3 strategy game valkyria chronicles. I have honestly only seen bits and pieces of it, but from what I have seen (and knowing the story) It should for the most part fit what you are looking for. It is very character driven, deals with certain tragedies that war can bring, has a bit of romance, and yes some important characters die. Not as dark and gritty as rainbow though. (It is only rated PG-13)

Seconding Now and Then, Here and There. It's exactly what you're looking for.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

Innocent Venus might also qualify.
