Personally i prefer the flat spines, i find they look much better on a shelf and just look much better in general.

Manga uses these, at least everything i own anyway, but comic anthologies/colelctions usually do not which is why is why i am don't buy comic book ones. I like actual comics, thats a different story though.

I actually like paperback more for some reason, as far as collections go. if it's a single book then i would prefer to have the hard cover though. there's the price factor of course with the hard backs being more expensive :P

So which do you prefer?

I know some of the original Japanese version of manga use round spine, which is what I prefer. I also like paperback.

I don't care that much, but if the costs were the same I would always go for Hardcover, also for the longer durability. I only tend to buy Graphic Novels in Hardcover though and longer mangas or comics with many volumes I will always buy paperback. Some of my german manga have round spines and they look quite fine too.
I probably regret this post by now.

In an ideal world where cost and shelf space aren't taken into consideration, I'd go with hardcover. That's not to say that I wouldn't have some of the nicer quality mass trade paperbacks in the mixture as well. I like them both. The only ones I would really cut out are the really cheap paperbacks, the six or seven dollar ones. Ever since I've gotten a kindle, books that I'd only buy in the cheap paperback version are the ones I'd buy digitally. It's not worth taking up shelf space for a book that I'd probably only read once.

I like the flat spines for manga too. In fact, I think the dimensions and format of print manga are perfect. I love how they stack and how they fit on shelves.

I really like the look of the old, round spined and hardcover books but I think for easy reading, space saving and portability I'd go with flat spined paperback books.

Most of what I own are flat-spined paperback books.

Same I like Hard cover the weight of it feels good. Plus it serves as a good weapon.

Nearly everything I own is Hard cover, and i don't mind flat or round spines. I loath paperbacks, though it doesn't stop me from reading them.
