It's no secret that I love Matsumo Leiji's works. This is my favorite of his series.

Theres a lot of old anime/manga I love. But I would have to say my most personal favorite would be Berserk. The animation for the first berserk anime is ok, but the dub was very good and the story is incredible. But the artwork for the manga is truly breathetaking and is infintely better than the anime. And as the manga continues the artwork continuously gets better and better.

Well of course my personal favorite is Akira! I cannot wait for the live action movies!!!!

If anyone else is an Akira fan, I will keep you up to date with any latest news I hear about the movies.

I do love Berserk as well! However my other fave is got to be Ghost in the Shell, such an epic sci-fi for its time!

@Dante
I'm getting ready to embark on that journey. Anime then the manga since it's still ongoing. I hear nothing but good about it & it's been on my plan to watch for years. I wish had more time to indulge.

@Cat
*hugs* Those are great choices.

@Bugsquasher
Golden Boy is a favorite for me as well. Both the sub & dub. Right now I'm watching Ping Pong Club and it has some seriously funny stuff in it. It's the kind of humor that catches you off guard. If you haven't seen it & are looking for a laugh give it a shot.

Yeah, Ghost in the Shell if one of my favorites too... The story is awesome (i love sci-fi ^^), the animation is very good and the music fits very well.
An other old favorite is Rurouni Kenshin, especially the Trust and Betrayal OVA.

@gINGER - sweet I hope you enjoy it. The anime was pretty good for it's time. But the manga is infinitely better, I hope the new movie "Berserk Saga Project" lives up to the hype. Yeah I understand that.

@Kittilicious - Yes both Akira and the original GitS movie are both epic.

Urusei Yatsura is another good series. I haven't made it very far past season 2 though. It's very episodic, usually 2 per 20 something min ep. I'll have to make some time for it. Lum-chan is awesome.

besides titles like Akira, Noir (oldschool, lol? it's only 10y.o.), Satoshi Kon's movies (they are all not really oldschool as well) and GiTS that have been already mentioned i'd like to add

firstly,
H. Miyazaki's early works, esp. Nausicaä (the manga's even better)

then,
old GainaX stuff, mostly their brilliant Otaku No Video and, of course, Wings of Honneamise

and
Genocyber, for instance,
because guro is fine too.

there are plenty of titles worth watching (and even worshipping =)) out there, like GTO, Slayers, Escaflowne, Infinite Ryvius and many more, but my post will be too long if i try to remember everything :3

oh yes, and my personal favorite is Cowboy Bebop. it may be very banal but - who cares? to me, CB is simply one of the greatest animation series ever made. and that music...

// ahh, hope i haven't forgitten anything sufficient :)
hate capital letters.
deal with it.

Personally, I consider anything pre2000 oldschool. 10yrs is a lot of time in the animation world. Everybody's definition is different though. But, I am fond of the really old stuff. The original Dirty Pair is my favorite. I'm a big oldschool sci-fi fan (but not mecha at all). I recently started the Gall Force movies. I will prob only watch til 4 but I'm not sure. One was awesome, and so far 2 is decent.

I also dig old stuff like the Violence Jacks but most people don't agree with me that they're so fun. :D Have to add Vampire Hunter D movies, Wicked City, & Demon City Shinjuku as well.

Miyazaki is genius of course & I love Otaku no video. Honneamise I need to watch. Genocyber is okay.

I have watched some older movies by now, like Metropolis, Akira and a bunch of Miyazaki films. They are all great of course.

And I would like to take this opportunity and display my eternal love for Cardcaptor Sakura. If my external HD didn't explode I would be watching it right now.

I've been on an oldschool kick again. Two titles I really liked are
  • Baoh:

  • & Biohunter:

I also thought Twilight Q was interesting:
Here are the ovas. I liked both, but 1 much more... although most like 2 better for some reason.

I forgot to mention that Twilight Q isn't blood & guts like the other 2. It's sci-fi, time travel, & psychological.

Anyway, I watched Iczer-1 last night. It was entertaining. Not the best or worst. Just some old sci-fi with awesome character designs, yuri couples, giant mechas, laser swords, and a cool soundtrack.

Golden Boy and Junk Boy. Both are very funny.

Slam Dunk - best sports anime I've seen.

I never liked those shows as a kid cause they looked weird lol. (It was Dragon ball z & sailor moon here though) I never thought I would become an anime fan. It happened when I was 19, although I did like anime movies in original Japanese language before that. (Like GITS & Vampire Hunter D) When I got Netflix I rented Trigun & I found new obsessions then.

Anyway, I wanted to share with everyone an anime film I recently watched. It is from the 80s and based off a comic published in 1978 that popularized nekomimi (catgirls). In the film a little kitten thinks she will grow up to be a human. She internally sees herself as having human features (and also other cats too) even though she really doesn't. It really is pretty weird to me. It was an ok film. Moe as hell.

The Star of Cottonland <== check it out if you're bored. It's on youtube with eng subs.

That's why I loved watching Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball, they were so much different then the regular cartoons that were on TV.

Well... i still don't like those shows. So that was probably it. Although I do respect them for what they have done to bring in new fans & of course just the sheer popularity of them. (& I still plan to watch the original Dragon Ball - so I haven't written it off completely. :D)

Just to update my above post - I did start Dragon Ball. I really like the first arc. I put it on hold for now though.

Anyway, I have to share this rare find from youtube. Cat-Eyed Boy (1976) - A treat for horror/oldschool fans - A short series adapted from a Kazuo Umezu manga. It is done in an odd 70's experimental kind of way. You'll see what I mean. Like cardboard cutouts. But, it's awesome imo. There's only one ep & I don't know which one it is, but it has all 3 parts. It's not subbed at all, but it's easy enough to follow (especially if you've picked up enough watching subbed shows ;D).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvGPqY_doV4&list=PLIZhKFqsBfTApBZAQ2FKfvEeITwAeo5Tr&index=1

There are also 2 clips of previews for other shows in that list. Enjoy. xD
