Between Shinsen, Menclave, and Live-Evil, we should have some sort of quality sub. :p

We decided already not to do that this season because it makes updating a hell of a lot more tedious... Most groups make a news post every time they release an episode, so having a link to their site should suffice.

...I somehow missed that post. D:

Yeah, it's a little tedious to maintain... actually, a lot tedious. And since I have to evade my school's web filter with a very slow proxy to get the info (in addition to working two jobs, writing a thesis, and taking classes), it takes a while. So yeah... best bet is to either use the links to the fansubbers or to search TokyoToshokan, either one, sadly, will be faster than waiting for me to update it. Dx

I know that they're a valid way of fansubbing, but I wouldn't say that it's a superior method at all, at least not since the spread of imbedded softsubs. Especially if you plan on archiving the work... it looks cluttered. At any rate, though, if we were to start including .smi files, we'd have to start including raws, too, which would get a little excessive. That, and Korean Otaku just said himself above that he probably wouldn't continue once the series was picked up.

I don't see how a large video file is superior to downloading the best quality untouched and unedited RAW available whenever you want and then watching the episode translated the instant that subs are released. You also have the ability to change sub settings or edit mistakes, and script files are so small in filesize that they can be distributed easily, and in every format.

With fansub video files you can get bad encodes, annoying edits, hardsubs blocking the screen, no way of changing ugly subs. With hardsubs, you're downloading a slightly modified video file that was available days before, with softsubs, you're downloading a script file with a video attached.

Just because they aren't conventional, it doesn't mean they can just be dismissed as "not proper".

/end improperly long rant

Oh well, it's fairly irrelevant since YQ won't be continued - but still, the idea that you would make a "Fansub releases" thread and then there's the chance you would ignore specific subs that people are looking for because of their format is a bad idea. Gurren-Lagann and Dennou Coil (shows I consider the best of 2007) used script files all the time, and people appreciated them. Not just that, but it took hours or weeks before muxed video files were actually released for these shows, when script files were already available.

This is an excellent thread, you can't let yourself down by not noting every resource around.

Yay, finally updated! Thanks, guys!

@so_addictive: Partly true. A.S.S (Anonymous Speed Subs) recently changed to Aero (and a good move on their part... the name was not compelling). "Anonymous," however, usually just means that someone is releasing the anime without crediting themselves. I'll probably take down the "Anonymous" entries altogether, though.

@mflatischler: Didn't see that one coming, but I'm certainly happy about it!

@Denizen: I disagree, though I am uninformed on the subject. It is my assumption that script files are unable to do some of the things that embedded subs can (such as using unique fonts and effects), but I'm speaking in ignorance and may very well be wrong. I wouldn't say they're unconventional or improper though, it's just not what most people will be looking for.
Even so, I think you have a valid argument, and I think my argument rests on personal preference more than reason. Therefore... why not! Unless atlantiza wants to contest it, script files are perfectly legitimate from now on.

Two questions for you, though:
1) Do you know of a place to search for script-sub groups?
2) What program do you use to edit script files? I have a version of Kodocha with horrible script subs (timing, translation... everything's bad), and I have long wished I could edit them.

Me neither, I was just surprised seeing the groups name popping up in fansubwiki changes.
They also restored their website.

fonts can be attached to the container (mkv)
(karaoke) effects can also be done with scripts
well, typesetting can be either done in both ways, with or without touching the raws, it just differs how complex it can/should be and in graphical quality...
for example mail conversations, either you edit the screen frame by frame with photoshop or put a shape on it and the text on top of it with the script....

for Q2: Aegisub http://malakith.net/aegiwiki/
(.ass .ssa .srt files) for example

Not sure when this conversation started (more like I'm too lazy to scroll up or go back a page), but I'll reply anyway. Because I want to. Sub files do the exact same thing whether they are hardsubbed or softsubbed. Heavy karaoke will make softsubbed videos lag a lot, but if just \k (a simple karaoke effect) is used, then a fair amount of computers, depending on the codec(s) used and the computer, will be fine with it. More groups are using simple karaoke effects (gg, at least when they include karaoke-timed songs, is the first example I can think of) but many still used more advanced karaoke, which sometimes isn't even made in the subtitle program. Same goes for AFX typesetting (ever see a sign subbed so amazingly to the point the subs looked like the original? probably AFX typesetting), so if a group is doing really good typesetting, it won't be in their sub file. I'm 99% sure these are put into the video by the encoder, but I'm not completely sure.

Anywayyyy... I'm not really sure what I'm contesting on not contesting, but if you're asking about linking to groups that release sub files, sure, whatever, it's fine. Subs are subs.

And now your other questions.
1) Your best bet is to search TokyoToshokan for ".ass"
2) Aegisub is the most common one (especially for anime fansubs), but there are a few others.

Everything should be up-to-date now!

I need to find more info on "facepalm.jpg"... it was just something I happened to see on TokyoToshokan, and there is no record of the group anywhere aside from a torrent filename. I'm downloading it to see if it's real or not, but the internets have not been kind to me and it will probably take a while to finish. Unfortunately, no one else has subbed Bihada Ichizoku.
facepalm.jpg does appear to be a legitimate translation... I can see why no one else has picked it up, though.

Also, I had to remove Yoroshiku/Ureshii from Skip Beat! because, having taken a closer look at the website, they haven't actually released anything yet, only announced. So yes... only speedsubs for Skip Beat! so far.
