Sparked by Saggy-Z's comment, and pure curiosity, which was your favorite, and why?

On balance I really don't see any difference between them as far as preference goes. I love the storylines for both series, and though I slightly prefer the Laughing Man story to the Individual Eleven story, Kuze and Gohda are both brilliant characters. 2nd gig has slightly better animation, but that's understandable, and it's not as if the first series is in the least bit bad looking. I think I like 2nd gig's music a titch more but again it's a matter of one being more excellent than the other.

Must say I prefer Particularist Eleven, as the fansub had it, to the official Individual Eleven name, though. Seems much more suited to their ideals.

It's hard to choose really. 1st Gig had an interesting plot with the Laughing Man bit and it's random, single plot eps. 2nd Gig had a very interesting plot and, imo, better fleshed out characters then the first as well as a somewhat darker subtext. Plus the eps with background information of the Major, Saito, and Pazu were some of the best out of both series.

I guess if I really had to choose I'd have to pick 2nd Gig. IMO it was better thought out and had more of an interesting pretext then 1st Gig. It also had one of the better antagonists to come to light out of both series (Gohda's character was brilliant).

I went for the 2nd gig, purely because the last few episodes are awesome. Also I love the music for these episodes it really heightens the action, especially Cyberbird.

That's not to say the I don't think the 1st gig is great, the 2nd just has the slight edge for me.

i voted for the 1st gig, cause I think the whole "stand alone complex" worked out better there

of course i love the 2nd gig, too. espacially the connection between the proper protagonist and the antigonist (don't know if that's right ^^) *not spoilering*

Definitely the 1st Gig. The plot is a lot better than in the 2nd Gig. I'm not saying that the story of the 2nd is poor, but it's by far more standard.

1st Gig for me as well. I enjoyed 2nd Gig's ideology and revolutionary plot, but I loved the hacking and hi-tech stuff that was done throughout 1st Gig and the Laughing Man Case.

Reviving old thread! XD

I voted I loved them equally, but if I was forced to choose just one, it would have to be 2ng Gig. Oh, those brave Tachikoma! I cried like a little baby :3

2nd gig, and by far, it's just much stronger, deeper, a better characterization, with almost no flaw, whereas the first 5 episodes of season 1 clearly suck.

I liked 1st the most. The story was alot better and didn't rely so much on characters outside of Section 9. Laughing man was so enigmatic, where they tried to build up Kuze as such but I ended up just being bored with his character. Also, I didn't like the back story between him and the Major. But, they are both great series.

I'v gotta go with the 2nd gig, okay the laughing man case was excellent but i feel the character development in this gig are by far better, and the whole story with the Major and Kuze is great, it allows us to see how the Major became cyberised and it shows her human side more.

i liked both but i did enjoy 2nd gig going into the backstories more with Pazu and Saito. I hope in the future they do a prequel of how Aramaki formed section 9 and how/when he first met the Major.

Both series were good! Just a nitpick with Motoko's character as drawn in the 2nd gig, her breast were too large! So anime! Well, that's just me!

Well, the first season revolved more around ciberization and how it's affecting society etc.

But 2nd GIG had this epic feel to it with all the political intrigue and international affairs, especially in the last couple of episodes. Don't misunderstand me, 1st GIG had all of these aswell, but the timing and drama just feel better exetuted in 2nd GIG.
Plus, Hideo Kuze is one of the most charismatic and appealing villains in anime history without being one-dimensional. Also, I like his English voice acting.

I honestly like 2nd GIG a lot more than the 1st GIG. The animation is more fluid and the artwork is more refined. Although I see that the first season has more standalone episodes (ie random sub-stories) which I find more interesting, I prefer how the second season focuses more on the main plot. Both seasons have their share of character exploration though.

Kuze Hideo is one of the best anti-villains in all of the anime titles I've seen, although the source of his philosophical habits is something I can't quite put my finger on.

If I may add since Kuze has been mentioned, I think Gouda is a really great character for a villain. He can intimidate people and manipulate them into carrying his goals. He's not the typical villain who slashes and murders, he is in a league above the stereotypical villains.

Leibstandarte: About your post above (two months late, lol), well her breasts did seem to increase but hey, she stopped wearing that one piece that let her ass hang out. :P

Haha, anyways. Gouda was definitely an amazing villian, I mean ... just look at that guys face! But he was really well done. I think I might like Kuze a little more just because he wasn't a true villian. The Laughing Man was really awesome from the first season too though...

Well whatever, they're all incredible. All characters are just amazing in the whole SAC series, definitely one of my favorite parts about the whole series.

2nd GIG was infinitely better than the first season. I liked the original, but the 2nd really expanded upon all the themes, as well as bring Proto and other side characters like Azuma into the story (although it was only for a short while). It reminded me much more of the manga, and there were some episodes that were panel for panel like the manga. Aside from that the production values really went up the the 2nd GIG, and I liked the opening song more (blasphemy, I know).

I've to agree with you on that! Another thought, I just think that Gouda's exit was too harsh. Well its just me, GitS wont be GitS without the Major "headblow-up" assassination, exit via freefall and disappear via thermo-optic camo! =)

He sure had it coming! LOL

I somehow agree with you but Gouda is the villain who happens to be your "not so typical villain". Sure, he may have the stereotypical scars/scary face but he is not the maniac or violent type who mauls or shoots people. He simply intimidates and manipulates them to do his will. HE orchestrates everything to fall according to his plan, actually his hands are never stained with blood, only the people he uses, like in episode 4 of 2nd Gig (Natural Enemies).

I really hoped that the Major should just let Togusa and Chief Aramaki cuff Gouda, they should've let the guy get his butt banged in jail for the rest of his life. That punishment is a whole lot worse than getting your head blown up! LOL But I do understand where the Major is coming from, after being separated for many years and because of the event started by Gouda she lost contact with "that" person again! Though this time contact has ended permanently. =(

Also, the order from PM Kayabuki was really meant to off him because she was the one most affected in the events in the climax of 2nd Gig.

Man, the guy doing it would have to use an industrial sized paper bag to cover up that face! Oh... that's mean.... but true.

I would have to go with the first season based on the Stand Alone episodes, mostly AG2O, and Laughing Man fiasco. However 2nd Gig's overall plot with Kuze and the refugee's was also well played.

Hmmm it is really hard to chose one. 1st GIG with Laughing Man, stand alone eps, cybernization and it's effetc on society (and very good OST I might add) was really well fleshed out.
2st GIG feals like matured version of 1st GIG. Characters has more depth to them, whole GIG focus is more on the individual 11 story line, better animation and even better OST.

I think it is natural 2st GIG is better then the first one.

While I prefer the first series' soundtrack, 2nd GIG exhibited more character depth, an arguably more complex and conspiratorial storyline, and greater coherency: even the dividual episodes had at least some slight relation to the larger storyline expressed in the individual and dual episodes. The prior season still had a fascinating concept and story, nonetheless.

The two series are awesome, but the Laughing Man was a bit better, and i really enjoyed the last episode when Kusagani and Chief Aramaki talk with the Laughing Man, and during the 2nd GIG i always wanted the Laughing Man to appear.
