OK, so I had this huge argument with a fellow Anime fan, and, if you know me, I'm an obsessive crazy fan of Gintama.

Well, let me just write this post to say:

"Why?"

Seriously, why do others bash Gintama? The person I was talking to has only seen 5 episodes and he watched RANDOM episodes, meaning he knew nothing about the backgrounds of the characters except "he's the main, he's a cop, he's a stalker", etc. which definitely does not form an emotional attachment.

And then I found it revolting when they said "I'm sorry, but Gintama is exactly like Bleach".
Really? You conclude that after watching only 5 episodes randomly out of 253 without even knowing the characters? How judgmental can you get?

And I kind of really lost it when he said "The main character is an asshole who just shouts random words that have nothing to do with the plot, and he's just an idiot who you want to strangle."
Really?
Gintoki?
Our Gin-chan?
He has only seen a couple of episodes, and he's already formed that hatred? And can someone please explain how and in what way does Gintoki even resemble characters from Bleach, as he argued? I'm going to give up on this.

But what made me blow my top mostly was:
"It's just a phase you're going through. It's like every kid who gets addicted to Naruto then realizes it's not as good as it seems to be. You'll get over Gintama."

Really? I mean, seriously? He has absolutely no idea what he's missing out on. Gintama? And Naruto? In the SAME sentence? How is that even possible? How is it possible for any sane human to even compare Gintama with a show like, gafhiua, Naruto?!
OH, excuse me, someone who did NOT even GIVE Gintama a try, but judged immediately.
I don't know about you guys, but I think Gintama haters are missing out on one of the best (and the best, to many) Anime series to exist. And it's a shame that they see the label shounen and the art style does not appeal to them (I mean, we deeeeeply apologize that Gintoki is not drawn moe-moe style, really, we really do.). I personally believe the art style is what even makes Gintama enjoyable. It kind of creates an emotional bond with the viewers, if you can understand what I'm saying.

So what do you have to say about the many many manyyyy Gintama haters out there?

Hm, well one that dislikes Gintama, hate is much too strong a word, I would just say that it is not my taste. I dislike comedy anime. I don't find it humorous, I cannot even crack a smile. Gintama was serialized in a magazine I read once. It was interesting however it was not funny and bordered on stupid sometimes. However, this is just my opinion of it and I respect that you strongly believe otherwise.

Everyone has that one anime that they enjoy but everyone hates. For example, for me it is School Days. You just have to keep on rolling with it. Love what you love, hate what you hate. It is not my job to change the opinion of others, however I have a right to say that I don't like your opinion.

If you like Gintama go out and watch it. Just do not expect everyone else to do the same.

Ehh, I watched the first episode of Gintama. I nearly died of boredom. However! I do not bash it. I plan on trying a few more episodes before I start bashing it (if I don't grow to like it, that is~)
How many episodes should I watch to see if I like it?

Basically. "Gintama" can be substituted with any anime, too. However, I think OP is mostly upset by the fact they passed this sort of judgment without really giving Gintama a proper chance and, to top it off, their friend sounds like they were really quite rude! In such a position, I'd probably be peeved as well. Really, though, all you can do is tell them you disagree and agree to just leave it alone. If they won't stop bashing, tell them you just don't want to talk about it...

Anyway, I've really got nothing to say specifically on Gintama. I watched some episodes a long time ago, and found it enjoyable/funny, but it'll probably be a long while before I try to get into it again. It's too damn long. :c

You should skip the first 25s, and from 26 wait till you reach the UmiBouzu arc (around ep 50 I think). I know it's a lot but... thx for trying.

I'm sane and I can easily compare Gintama to Naruto : Gintama is boring, Naruto isn't... or at least a long time ago.

I don't see how someone can say that, unless they started Gintama with the mentality of planning on hating on it and finding the littlest things wrong with the series.

Which is kind of pathetic based on the fact that someone has the time to watch a series they don't plan on enjoying.

LOL @ OP. people have different tastes and your comparison level is horrible.

I watched 38 episodes in last 4 years and it's on-hold for fourth time. That' means i give it four chances already and i'm willing to give it one more. If by episode 50 it's doesn't get me interested to watch remaining 151 episodes of first season then it's going in my drop list with pretty bad rating.

by the way. comedy is my most favorite genre and when i started gintama, i thought it's going straight in my favorites but it turn out so boring that i couldn't able to finish 15 episodes and put it on-hold, and

well, it's just like all of those other anime with a lot of episodes..
most of the time those kinds of anime get better as you keep watching, in the end you can't expect everyone to like what you like (as Nami-nyan already said)
haven't watched much of gintama yet, but I really like it so far (random but I laughed a lot more than with some other comedy anime..).
especially when it comes to anime that focus more on comedy you need to remind yourself that a lot of people have a different kind of humor and find different things funny (or not funny)..

Of course its not a problem,

I've watched ALL episodes of Naruto (without the filler), and mostly, I enjoyed it, and in the Shippuuden, the show got worse and I dropped it....

you know I HATE Naruto's main characters,, all of them (esp Sakura and Sasuke) since the very beginning... However, I still watch it because the story and everything else is good enough for me to keep watching, but after the vast amount of uninteresting fillers (I think it take place after sasuke left), and in shippuuden, I can't bear Sakura and Sasuke any longer.... I stopped watching Naruto after
and after that, theres the filler again and I dropped it, I prefer read the manga (but I ended up stop reading it too)

Gintama is a long anime with little filler... I mean theres almost no filler in it!

The problem of course not only the fillers, and I'M NOT A NARUTO HATER! I'm even planning to watch it when it's finished.

back to the topic, it's up to you to decide, keep watching Gintama or not, I won't judge you, but, I recommend to watch it until ep +50 or at least past the Benizakura arc, or, you can watch Gintama one and only movie (because it's a remake from the Benizakura arc in the tv series), but if you dislike the comedy, and not attached to the characters or even hate the main characters, I think it's better to drop it :D

But, after I watched so many anime (I'm quite picky in picking up anime), although not all the episodes is good, but Gintama is the most anime I attached to, :D

Oh just saying, but I'm also a Bleach fan and I've watched all of the episodes (with most of the fillers), but now, Bleach is in my on hold list because I lost interest after

And I'm currently watching Katekyo Hitman Reborn (And I love it!)

Next, I'm planning on watching One Piece too... :D (let see if KHR/OP can take Gintama's place in my heart)

Sometimes you need to let it out if you really get angry over something, and maybe he just want to share his disappointment to fellow Gintama fans....

watched 53 episodes, put it on-hold many times (and it is on-hold now), because for me it always gets so damn boring after like ~5 episodes, just don't like its episodic nature, still it's fun to watch 1-2 episodes from time to time
I understand the haters yet I don't really understand the ones who rated it so high though

The point isn't merely a difference in opinion. The issue is that picking 5 random episodes and going on about how the main character is an asshole who spouts gibberish, is a patently poor way to go about it. Such a haphazard way of sampling might be fine for a show that is totally episodic but that doesn't work well for most anime since their stories/arcs happen across multiple episodes.

Also if you don't classify as yourself as a hater(not just dislike) then why are people defending your opinion in this topic?

Agreeing to disagree is oversimplifying the topic at hand.

I don't like the main characters in Naruto Shippuuden , but some of the Protagonists in the show are made well, Kabuto's whole transformation, Pain for another example,

And I highly recommend One Piece, the story is amazing for a shounen, it just gets better and better, it's also the highest selling manga in Japan by like 30 million more sold copies than the 2nd ranking manga

Third this. Only a bit nicer! lol

Topic should be locked as well.
Making a thread and calling it "Gintama haters" is just asking for trouble.

I mean I understand why you are ranting, the guy isn't exactly being rational. That's just it though, he's just being an idiot. These kind of guys exist everywhere. This guy's opinion is worth shit to me considering you said he watched 5 episodes at random but you also got to learn, with EVERY popular anime out there will ALWAYS be haters. It's unavoidable with every popular anime like Gintama, Bleach, OP, etc etc. Plus we all have different tastes in what we like. Some may love Gintama while others may hate it, like I said it's unavoidable.

Also aren't you being kind of hypocritical as well? I noticed in your rant you were offended by having Gintama and Naruto in the same sentence. Basically saying that Gintama is a God-like show while Naruto is trash compared to it. Also offending anyone who compares the two by calling them insane. Then I decided to take a look at your anime list and noticed Naruto is nowhere to be found in that list. Now perhaps you may have watched it and have yet to add it to your list but from what I am seeing you are also judging Naruto the same way he judged Gintama without even giving the show a chance.

I'm not trying to defend the guy or attack you or anything. Like I said earlier he's an idiot but I'm just taking a neutral stand-point while responding.

Always be careful with what you say when ranting.

It's weird for me to say this on the internet, but life is full of annoyance. If minor annoyance like this can send him on such wall of rant then... well it's quite amusing actually.

^pretty much that. Conversation would imply discourse occurred. All I see is someone made a rant, that was not actually intended to spark actual discussion, made evident by how it's worded and the fact he/she never came back to the topic itself.

To respond to the actual topic though. I am not a huge fan of Gintama. I find the episodes to be "hit or miss" in terms of comedy and for me majority of the time they simply "miss". Not to say I find the show bad, because the times it hits for me, it's a grand slam. I certainly do not consider it the best or one of the best anime series ever made, but this is also partially for my regard for comedy as a whole. I have never bothered with Naruto so I can't say what I think in comparison of the two, although since the two are of separate genre's I don't see a reason to even bother.

I personally find Gintama to be one of the most over-rated series on MAL, however that is the extent of my bashing and isn't a reflection on the show itself.

Well, as for me, I never acknowledge comments of people who never watch anime until the end, because their hatred lacks understanding and is just triggered by fans who "overrate" the show, not by the show as it truly is. What I wanna say is, if someone doesn't like it, then OK; I respect that. But for him/her to HATE on it after watching a measly number of episodes is just plain stupid. If I initially hate an anime, I watch all the eps to fully grasp its sense and see its strong/weak points.

And although some might say Gintama does not deserve a top spot, I say it damn well deserves it. Overrated 10s from a few fanboys/girls will not put Gintama on the top. The reason why it is in there is that most of the people that watched it liked it. So, much respect to this anime for being the king of MAL. I have no objections whatsoever

He provided the information on what part of his friend's judgement is flawed, he gave his opinion on both Gintama and his friends opinion, and he invited others to comment on it. That is him trying to have a discussion about it and an attempt at dealing with his problem because apparently talking to that friend is useless.

People like you go "deal with it" but have no clue on the various ways people can cope with these sort of situations. You might not like that he ranted here about it but that doesn't mean his rant isn't a coping mechanism for him, amusing as it may be. Belittling it and acting superior to him won't do anything but fan flames. If your advice of "deal with it" is sincere then you shouldn't want to increase his annoyance with a flippant attitude.

Better to make a rant anonymously on the internet and to hopefully get it out of your system than to pile up little annoyances and let them fester until you erupt in real life. Hell, specialized forums like this is just a bigass support group that like-minded people use to affirm their shared interests.

To respond to the actual topic though. I am not a huge fan of Gintama.

The actual topic is Gintama haters though. The topic isn't a place for you to justify your minor dislike of it.

Now give me a good reason that naruto is so bad that you can't even put in the same sentence with gintama.

Discussion? disucssion about what?

Read the opening post. The topic and questions the TC asks are right there.

His friend might watched 5 random episodes but i watched 38 sequence episodes and didn't enjoyed as he's trying to make this

And yet the topic is about his friend watching 5 random episodes of Gintama, not 38 in sequence like you. Let's try and stay on topic, do you think watching 5 random episodes of Gintama is a good way to understand/appreciate the series? If the show was Robot Chicken or ATHF then watching 5 random eps would give you a good idea as to what the series is about but for something like Gintama(a mix of standalone eps and serialized story) I don't honestly see how picking 5 random eps could be seen as anything less than stupid.

If you want to play Devil's advocate go ahead but be honest about it.

Some problems are really meaningless but such a big deal is made out of them

How is making a single topic on the internet making a big deal? To me it likes like a minor annoyance so he made a minor internet rant about. Now he goes and writes a book about that one encounter then we can talk about him turning it into a big deal.

I do find the number of people claiming to have dropped the first season of Gintama to be rather high for a topic in the Gintama' sub-forum.

I thought at-least you will accept that how bad his rant post is, comparing and hating other shows without giving a single fair reason and asking how can someone hate what he likes.

Questions? like how gintoki is similar to ichigo? or how bad bleach and naruto is? or gintama haters are missing out one of the best show eva? and it's shame they see label shounen because it's clearly some upper level show. lol worthy questions. without explaination and totally subjective.

I'm not playing Devil's advocate role here but trying to point out, this topic is not discussion but a rant. which you're mistaking for a discussion.

Nope. it's not about 5 random episodes. i said you don't get it and after quoting a line, you still don't get his post. so you might want to read it again. let me bold this line for you.

What comparing and hating of other shows? You might want to re-read the opening post. The TC's friend was the one talking about Bleach and Naruto. The TC merely reacted and called those comparison stupid because Gintama does things completely differently than those other shows and is part of the reason why watching 5 random episodes isnt't a way to form a proper opinion. So it looks like you understand the outrage the TC has against his friend for not having fair reasons for his hate of Naruto and Bleach, why can't you realize the TC's friend has done the same to Gintama?

Questions? like how gintoki is similar to ichigo? or how bad bleach and naruto is? or gintama haters are missing out one of the best show eva? and it's shame they see label shounen because it's clearly some upper level show. lol worthy questions. without explaination and totally subjective.

You're going to have to read the opening post and find the questions again as those are not the questions being asked. Of course I am not saying his questions are without emotional bias, he has plenty. However, his questions are perfectly skewed for a forum devoted to the discussion of Gintama.

It's about the friend's unfair and poorly formed opinion. The same opinion that caused you to take issue with when the friend commented about Naruto and Bleach.

Who has questioned your right? Don't confuse me saying it is odd for people who haven't seen Gintama' to be participating in the Gintama' forum with me saying those people are "idiots". If you want to argue with me don't make up things or hurl insults as it will cause our conversation to end quickly either from you getting banned or me completely ignoring your comments.

i was wondering what's the meaning of the title. It's kinda provoking don't you think ?! but anyway from my point of view, both Naruto and Gintama are great series with great plot. Personally i like Gintama more, well actually i love it so much that i use my avatar as my wallpaper in every single one of my gadget. Only by watching only 5 episodes of Gintama, i am too not going to be hooked, but i don't really think it's a good idea to judge the anime as mediocre after watching 5 episodes out from more than 250 episodes.

That being said, naruto is good, gintama is good. So get over it people ! They are very different, so what if someone love naruto and hate gintama ? the fact the show is in the first rank in MAL Top Anime is enough prove that gintama give good impact and good feedback from people, and the fact that naruto has been airing since i was a kid and still on going in my early 20s is too a prove that the show still have people who love it and root for it.

not sure if serious.

I think more discussion is useless with you as it clearly seems you don't even understand his post. He quoted his friend words in "commas" and after that he's stating his own opinion. His friend hate both gintama and naruto and think they're similar. okay, that's his friend opinion. actually his friend is right in some way. hating or loving is totally subjective, so i don't blame him if he hate shounen shows like naruto, one piece, bleach, gintama etc but they're all shounen, running in shounen jump same magazine. even though they take things differently still they have few things similar. action, comedy, targeted to certain audience and gintama parodied bleach several times, even ichigo seiyuu said few lines in episodes (if i remember correctly) but your TC is saying "How is it possible for any sane human to even compare Gintama with a show like, gafhiua, Naruto?!".. lol. that's his opinion not his friend words. he saying gintama is show out of this world and a sane person won't compare it show like "gafhiua, Naruto"

Seriously i don't care about naruto or bleach if someone like them or hate them, but it's funny that you think he's actually making important discussion about his friend random 5 episodes. keep up the good work. :)

The TC is still not the one comparing and hating on Naruto or Bleach. The point you were trying to make about the TC being a hypcrite doesn't make sense because you are getting the TC and her friend's statements confused.

I don't see Naruto on the TC's anime list and don't know her opinion of it, all I can tell is that she thinks Naruto and Gintama aren't comparable because the two do things differently. Gintama is heavy on the comedy and mixes in light helpings of action with a few poignant moments of serious sentimentality. Naruto is drama and action. It uses a little comedy in places with specific characters but it is more about the drama of the story than jokes. Being aimed at the same age group doesn't make the shows similar in execution. People that don't watch 5 random episodes of Gintama can understand that and don't go making baseless conclusions.

I also don't know what "gafhiua" is. So if that is her insulting Naruto then I stand corrected.

Seriously i don't care about naruto or bleach if someone like them or hate them, but it's funny that you think he's actually making important discussion about his friend random 5 episodes. keep up the good work. :)

It's funny that you got this far trying to validate her friend's opinion and haven't actually commented on whether or not picking 5 random episodes of an anime is a smart way make up ones mind. I am not trying to make it more important than what it is but I think actually commenting on what is said is better than going offtopic to explain why you don't like Gintama.

I think him trying to have a conversation about it here is his way of dealing with it.

You guys sound like a bunch of those irritating inspirational posters that are used to keep cubical workers from killing themselves.

That's not a conversation, that's not a discussion. That's a pissed off rant from someone who fails to understand that anyone else could ever hate Gintama.

And it's even more overstated by him asking how in the world anyone could ever hate the show.

Hilariously enough that's yet another reason a lot of people dislike a lot of shows.
Because they hear how overly-Godly they're supposed to be and then stay far, far away since the crazy fans won't shut the hell up about it.

Man you are going to have to realize that for every opinion there will always be a counter opinion. If you are this passionate about Gintama and have watched the whole thing then you should act like Gin-chan when it comes to people like that. Just pick your nose and ignore the comment, move on, the person who told you that they hated Gintama after only watching 5 random episodes was probably trolling you.

Ignorance is bliss my friend. Watch whatever you want don't let other people's opinion ruin it for you. In the end you are watching the show because you thoroughly enjoy it right? So just keep laughing your ass off and enjoying the show. Those people that don't like Gintama or don't get it will be the ones missing out.

It still qualifies as a discussion even though the topic and tone disagrees with you.

Such an outburst would not be well received in a general area of the forum but within a subforum devoted to the show would be where raving fangirls, and boys, belong.
