I just checked my favorite anime Rainbow at MAL. http://myanimelist.net/anime/6114/Rainbow:_Nisha_Rokubou_no_Shichinin
It aired for about half a year. I guess it means it wasn't produced for years like every Hellsing OVA.

I just watched OVA 8. It felt like It felt so short like just one episode for some anime series. And now I need to wait another year(s) for next one which will just be another short episode and take the story a gram further.

So why?

Madhouse doesn't get shit for all the anime they make. It's sad that Kaiji probably won't get the sales it deserves.

Anyways, Madhouse works on several projects at a time (like most studios)
Ranbow is a TV production. They air a TV version weekly, then fix it up for the DVD/BRs.
Hellsing Ultimate is an OVA, which they can release whenever the hell they feel like it.

So basically everyone watching Hellsing was waiting FOREVER for this OVA to come out.
If they made huge sales for this OVA, I'm sure the speed would be faster.

But all that aside, the producing studio for this seems to change hands more than a poker game. You don't have to attribute it to just Madhouse though. I don't even have a grasp on it at this point. Satellite, Madhouse, Graphinica,Kelmadick, a whole bunch of names.

ULTIMATE RESPONSE FROM ME HERE, STICK IT AND CLOSE THE TOPIC =D!!!
But seriously, so many folks don't have a clue about why OVA8 came out so late. And then they are assuming some completely wrong theories about the reasons behind the 1,5 year waiting. And then they are spreading those around. So I've done the first line in big fat letters to draw some attention. Because I know the answer and willing to spread the word of TRUTH! Phew...

So. Here are Hellsing Ultimate release dates so far:

Hellsing I (10.02.2006)
==> 6,5 months ==>
Hellsing II (25.08.2006)
==> 7 months ==>
Hellsing III (04.04.2007)
==> 11 months ==>
Hellsing IV (22.02.2008)
==> 9 months ==>
Hellsing V (21.11.2008)
==> 9 months ==>
Hellsing VI (24.07.2009)
==> 5 months ==>
Hellsing VII (23.12.2009)
==> 11 months ==>
Hellsing OVA BD-Box I-V (22.10.2010)
== 9 months ==>
Hellsing VIII (27.07.2011)

We can take a calculator and figure out the average time to produce one episode is 8 months.
The fastest OVA so far is OVA7 by Madhouse, it only took 5 months to produce. The reason behind it is the fact OVA 6 and 7 are basically one arc separated into two episodes, so they were doing both 6 and 7 kinda simultaneously at some point.
The slowest OVA so far is OVA4 by Satelight. The reason behind it is the fact OVA4 is just the longest one. Almost an hour long.

OVA8 came 20 months after OVA7 not because they were doing OVA8 for all that time. They were doing OVA8 for 9 months which is not the best time so far, but also not the worst.
You see, initially OVAs from 1 to 5 were only available in SD on DVDs, OVA6 was the first one released on Blu-rays. So right after OVA7 release day the team has started remastering OVAs 1-5 into the hight definition format which was not easy and took almost a year to accomplish. Only after this when the whole remastering thing was done they've returned to the usual schedule and started doing OVA8.

So, taking all the above into account, there is no reasonable ground to assume OVA9 will be released later than 9 months from here. On the contrary, faster release is actually possible.

There is no way one can blame Madhouse here. Here is a tip.
OVAs from 1 to 4 were produced by Satelight.
OVA5 came as the result of cooperation between both Satelight and Madhouse. To be precise, Satelight did some job firsthand only to handle it to Madhouse at the point they were replaced by the producer.
OVAs 6 and 7 are Madhouse personal work.
OVA8, The Dawn special and BD remastering of 1-5 was done by Graphinica and Kelmadick tandem.

So basicly the delay of OVA 8 was because of Blurays of earlier OVAs?

Was it worth it? I'm pretty sure most people don't have a Bluray player on their PC.

Yes.

It was totally worth it. Blu-ray player itself is three times cheaper from OVA1-5 BD-Box Set, so if you can afford yourself those discs, you can also afford the hardware. Not to mention BDs can be played with PlayStation 3 and PS3s are like everywhere in Japan.
But of cause the most important thing is this. DVD quality is simply ugly compared to BD. You won't go back to DVDs/DVD-rips after watching Hellsing OVA in all it's hight definition awesomeness.
And also they didn't just release the absolutely same stuff with more pixels in it. Other things were improved as well. Some scenes were redrawn from the scratch, in OVA1 they've redone all lighting and shading effects, they've even fixed one plot hole in OVA2.

Now tell me, what version have you watched, DVD or BD one?

I asked if it was a DVD or BD version. DVD-rip or BD-rip in your case.

Both. But since I'm a downloader, I have no say in wether Bluray is necessary.

Why? You can state your opinion, that's why this forum exist. I bet 90% of MAL users are downloaders, it newer stops anyone from chatting here.

I almost forgot most details when I watched episode VIII. But it's all right, I did remember captain (forgot his name) died and before he died he kissed the girl vampire (Victoria?).

Definitely gonna finish the last 2(?) episodes!

Ta-da-da-dam! Hellsing OVA IX release date has been spotted on amazon.co.jp, it's 2012/02/15.
Which makes six and half months from 27.07.2011 when long awaited OVA VIII hit the shelves. Sure it can (or should I say it will) be postponed for two more months at minimum =), still it gives us a 8 months delay in total, which is an ok release pace for Hellsing Ultimate standards.

Kilmat, I hope you see this message, 'cause there's something I wanna ask you:
You said that straight after OVA 7, they started working on remastering 1-5, however, at the bottom of the answer, you state that the remastering was done by G&K.
Could you elaborate on this?

By "they" (or "the team" to be precise) I meant whatever studio responsible for Hellsing Ultimate at the moment. 1-5 remastering was done by G&K just as I've clarified later, not by Madhouse.
