i think that he may had been traumatized by the lines in is head or his dad could have hit him very hard in the head when he was young.
maybe his mam (i don´t know anything about her) was also obsesed with simetry, who knows.

Maybe the stripes were caused by his dad hitting him..well, its a fun theory. I'm wondering why cant he dye his hair to get rid of the stripes. :/
Mysterious, but i think its trauma based.

Maybe he was just born with this XD But those stripes definitely made it worse XD

But dunno about not dying his hair. Maybe he leaves the stripes as punishment for being so imperfect lol.

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines.
He seems to have OCD so maybe its just one of those random obsessions.

Maybe he was dropped on his head...jk!

But seriously, I think he was playing with some toys when he was younger, or maybe he was born with it.

Because he knows that his obsession with symmetry makes him a totally awesome and lovable character. XD

Hmm for my real answer, judging by Shibusen's design, there is some part of the obsession that is inherited. Trying to live up to his father's legacy must be hard so he focuses on stuff his dad does that is admirable to an obsessive extent.

Why knows? All I know is that it's funny. XD

About the whole hair dying thing, I remember reading that since he's a shinigami he's immune to poison so even if he did dye his hair it would just come back.

Kid is the shinigami's son, so there are high expectations of him.
Since there are high expectations, he should act as a perfect boy.
Since he wants to be perfect, he strives for perfection.
Since he strives for perfection so much, it has become a disease.

That's what I think xD Hehe.

Or maybe, like what the others have mentioned, he's just born with it. Maybe his parents have a similar disorder. Hehe.

I like that way of thought - nice theory :D

Because he's just so perfect. That's all x3 and the lines of his hair...are perfectly symmetric too x3

I think its because he is a perfectionist. Its obvious he wants the same respect as his father and due to his attempt to do everything perfectly, he probably saw symmetry as perfect too.

I was actually wondering that just a little while ago. Why doesn't he just dye his hair completely black?

Its due to the fact he is a Shinigami, his body produces chemicals to reject poisons and such. It is due to this that the colour will return as the chemicals in the dye are rejected by the chemical. He brought this up when they went to the desert for the runaway train (I forgot its name >.< ). He admitted that this chemical his body produces will also prevent him being burned by the sun.

From a psychological point of view... it's simply serching for a... (I have no idea how to say it in English O.O)... sense of safety? I mean, that kind of obsession often occur when someone have a traumatic memories. Symmetrical world is a world without suprises.
We don't know anything 'bout Kid's mother, right? Maybe she died when he was little.

I know, strange idea x)

I'd think that he was born with it, if he weren't SO obsessed with it!
But it's cute, anyway xD

(And btw sorry for my English it's not good at all _._ )

Thats an intresting thought, it is quite possible. Maybe there are many factors that make him love symmetry.

I have wondered about Kid's mother before; is she dead, alive or non-existant? I do have theories about Kid's mother but Im too lazy to discuss it at the moment, might do tomorrow though.

I think it is because he wants to be perfect, and he thinks that only things that are symmetrical are perfect. And basically everyone who has created something revolves it around symmetry and perfection. Most things with be the same if you divide it in a verticle line (even our depictions of natural things are symmetrical) Ex. if you were to draw an apple you would make basically the left and right look the same as you would a person or animals basic outlines. People seem to like symmetry-we see beauty as symmetry. At least thats the conclusion i've come to after taking a good look around me at this world.

Obsession with symmetry could be a result of its continuous striving for perfection. Or otherwise - the expectations of the environment and the world against him. Perhaps because he was the son of Shinigami had to be perfect in everything?
Or just a taste.

I think this is it... He wants to be perfect (he is) but now, everything around him has to be perfect too.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Since he's a Shinigami, everyone would expect him to be a perfect boy.

At least, that's what i think :P

It seems to be true. But I can't take it as a real disease, cause it is so funny and cute, it's integral part of him (and very important as well)
