THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I had already figured out that this episode was a parody of RPGs, but the message on the ceiling of the tunnel pretty much spells it out; "Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord" is the subtitle of the first Wizardy game, a series that was very popular and influential in Japan (so much so that games continued to be made there after the series fizzled out in its native America).

The acclamation of the mechanics about there being six people going down into the "dungeon" is another Wizardy joke; the player could choose to have up to six members of their party and naturally choosing to use more made the game easier. Shinohara's failure to make a map is another; old RPGs did not provide an in-game map system and players would create their own. Not bothering with it like Shinohara made the game harder, of course.

The bluray of this episode is convenient for highlighting all the Wizadry and Aliens references in this episode lol.

A really entertaining episode for those who are into fantasy RPGs. Spotting the references was quite fun.
