"Shaft had better be behind this." - my thoughts

It would depend. I'd watch it either way, but, I'd like it to be much more like the game rather than an adaption of the manga version. I would want it to be abstract and vague and a kind of "draw your own conclusions" thing like the game.

I think I'd just cross my fingers hoping Nagahama Hiroshi would be in charge of it.

Yume Nikki is a game that really uses the medium of games to execute itself.
It really can't be adapted well while keeping the feel and intentions of the game intact.
It's far too open ended for that. No one ever speaks, either.

I wouldn't be excited for it, to say the least.

If Satoshi Kon wasn't dead, I'd pray he'd be behind it. He could handle the setting well.
Otherwise, I guess I'd be interested but hesitant. Shaft would probably be one of the better choices of company, but they'd probably have other priorities than some wierdo indie game.

That's a pretty hard question. I think that I wouldn't be against an anime adaption as long as it isn't a rushed cashgrab but that it instead tries to capture the surrealistic and somewhat strange feeling that yume nikki gives you. But doing such a thing isn't an easy task.

A big factor of what makes yume nikki so great is, as mentioned before, the feeling it gives the player. It makes you uneasy with it's repetitive musik and surroundings. This will most probably be "lost in translation" when made into an anime. Another hard task is being able to make an anime without a single dialogue while still trying to keep the watcher engaged in the story. Many of these things yume nikki got away with because it was a game but won't since it'll be turned into an anime.

But if studio shaft or kyoto animation were to animate it I'd still watch it, even if I would have somewhat low expectations.
