Snobbize. Patronize. Self-aggrandize.

IN LIZZIESPEAK:

Snobbise. Patronise. Self-aggrandise.

I am a bibiophile of the most exquisite tastes. I can read anything, possibly enjoy it, but if it is in a language I consider myself having the slightest mastery over (read: Swedish), I will belittle it and the futile efforts at skill on part of the writer. If I am incapable to, it earns my respect. Examples of fine works I can mush over as the literaryfag I am would be anything by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce or Witold Gombrowicz. However, I also defy the barriers between high and low culture and admirs ray Bradbury as much as the former names, not to mention Frank Heller.

Get thee to boasting, or I will feel silly in my excessive self-indulging.

I know D:

Never get around to do much reading anyway these days, with University taking up some time and various computer related geekery the rest.
I should be ashamed of myself.

To be had, there is a lot of awesomely written fantasy and Sci-fi. Bradbury, whom I mentioned, is of such ilk and generally all-around winsome. Tolkien could write well, if you look past his shallow characters.

Arthur C.Clarke, Robert Jordan (Although I felt he dragged it a bit too long, and now he's dead without finishing, that wanker), Orson Scott Card, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams would be my favourites. The two latter are hilarious and the others are either good or great.
Though I know I am missing out on much by only reading from those genres.

Pratchett and Adams are indeed incredibly hilarious. They don't write too well, but who cares? The books can still burst your gut like an alien with hiccups. Via laughter, of course, I doubt they are that dangerous.

I liked Rendezvous with Rama, but in retrospect I don't think it was too marvelous in anything but innovation. The sequels, eh, passable, but they weren't written as much by Clarke as by his cowriter. Damn cashcows.

I only read the book I am writing right know which is intellectual and a half, vastly complicated plot as one would expect from yours truly, as well as jumping from a realistic writing style to an often very surreal one when we visit his dreams.

What do you think about Arkady and Boris Strugatsky? For me their sci-fi stories are unique - especially "Piknik na obochine" (in English it´s "Roadside Picnic"). The movie "Stalker" by A. Tarkovsky is an adaptation of this novel.

As an example of literature, I would suggest books by Günter Grass ("Call of the Toad", "The Tin Drum", "My Century") ot Thomas Mann. I also like Stephen King´s early works - yet I guess that´s not really advanced taste :)
