You may notice a lot of people like Gintama or rabidly hate it. The haters often say it's childish toilet humor. This is typically because they watched the CrunchyRoll translation which is not a translation at all.

The good sub is primarily by Rumbel and Shinsen-Subs. You will want to find a source using their subtitles.

How do you know if you are watching the garbage version? <minor spoilers>

1. D.O.R.K.

2 "Hump! Hump me!"

3. Episode #50 has no reference intro

4. "retard"

The subtitles provided by Crunchyroll will not allow you to understand or enjoy the show's humor.

For discussion's sake I'm interested in hearing from anyone with such a hardboiled sense of humor they actually didn't use Crunchyroll's subs and did not laugh much.

...oh. I was watching from the Judas torrent, which now that I look at the page for it says it uses retimed Crunchyroll subs. Welp, guess I gotta watch the first 20 episodes again, and hopefully this time can give it something higher than a 4. It just feels wrong, me having hated it as much as I have. Thanks for the info! Hopefully this time I like the anime. :) 👍

Are the Crunchyroll subtitles that bad that make Gintama look like a 4/10?

The subtitles I watched Gintama with did a great job explaining the jokes and Japanese references so I could understand the jokes. I get that CR wants to adapt the jokes, but adaptation doesn't work with Gintama's type of humor. I prefer someone explaining the joke and know why it is so funny than just watching an adaptation that doesn't make the joke land.

??? I just watched all of Gintama a few months ago on Crunchyroll and none of the "garbage version" subtitles were present? Has something changed since like, the middle of September?

That's what I thought. I just recently watched the entire series on CR and didn't remember seeing anything like the OP was talking about.

I’ve finished the whole show on Crunchyroll and still had a great time. While I’m all for accurate translations, I think we’re fine with Gintama on CR. But I’m glad there’s other alternatives for those that might want that.

Checking the discussion thread for ep7 you can see up to 2015 the pet is called "Pace".
From 2016 it suddenly becomes referred to as "Pesu".

So if CR replaced their 1st revision, if that is what they are watching, it's still lacking.
Reading the descriptions it looks like they use "Odd Jobs" in place of "Yorozuya". It would be too sad not to know the name of the group whose antics you are viewing for 200 episodes.

I have just finished the entirety of Gintama, so far only the first one appeared. I do understand japanese, so it isn't that much of an issue.
