Have you ever voted in a municipal election, or do you just not care much about who your mayor is?

Is municipal politics still too controversial for CD? Where I come from, anything municipal-related is pretty tame, so I'll take a chance. Please don't start ripping each other apart over which is the best day to collect the trash.

Anyway, it's now municipal election time all across my province, and I've been following things a bit, but like every other time, most people around me really don't seem to care much about "small-scale" elections. But what about you? Are you interested in who's in charge of your city? Or have you also never voted at the municipal level?

I vote in my local elections consistently. Sadly, I voted wrongly in the last election, since the mayoral candidate turned out to be more of a NIMBY than she let on while campaigning, and the other candidate may have been better. I also tend to try to make a vote for any local position.

Sadly, I don't follow the news on this stuff much. National politics takes up more space online. I tend to look things up before the election.

I have only voted once ~17 years ago, it felt like a waste time, the results would have been the same without my vote.

Depends. In my province, the media are heavily covering the elections for the big cities like Montreal and Quebec City, but if you're from some small village, you have little to no means of getting to know who you're voting for (unless a candidate says something exaggeratedly controversial, then it might get some coverage).

@Zarutaku Erhm, I mean... if we pick every vote individually, the results will always be the same without each of them. I know it seems like your vote doesn't have much importance on its own, but if everyone who thought that actually voted, it really would make a difference.

I wonder why we can always count on someone named @Commit_Crime to actually make the responsible citizen decisions.

I dont think this is political, is more of a civil right discussion if you ask me.

And yes, I have vote on all of them since I can use my right to vote. I think it is a duty, but I also like politics, so i really care who wins tbh, even if there are these "small" places (they actually have a lot of power tbf).

Yeah, I vote sometimes - like when I don't have any super important stuff to do, like ironing my shoelaces or getting into a heated beet debate online. Anyway, I get Zarutaku and where he is coming from. Smart people got no business at elections, idiots will elect their *representative* anyway.

Well, I have only ever voted in one election (2016.) At the time, I was living in an unincorporated community, so there's wasn't really a mayor or any other municipal position to vote for.

I vote for my republicans so yeah. I wish a shrink the gov party existed so I just vote what I think is the lesser of 2 evils.

Not really for my old province. I think paying taxes is more important than voting in a free election.

I doubt it, because the vote distribution would probably be similar to the others, so the only noteworthy difference would be an increased number of votes, whereas the percentages would pretty much remain the same, and so would the final results.

Usually not, only really provincial/federal. That said, I do think a good citizen should be involved, in even their lower forms of government. We have upcoming municipal elections, so yeah I am trying to take some time, and figure out who I am going to vote for.

Yes, but stopped with that one too. It happened in 2009 and my brother was on one of the running lists with a smaller role, but because we heavily argued and yelled at each other during the days before for... i can't recall why, i voted for his list but not specifically for him, and his party still lost. It happened again in 2014 (this time with uninvolved family members), once again a more left-leaning list, and it lost again. Still did one last time in 2019 but can't even remember who i voted for and at that point i didn't even consider the former administration an enemy anymore, especially since it raised money for a new basketball gym for the team i played for as a teen and am still involved with now to a lesser extent, and actually managed to build it up quickly.

Like every 5 years, last normal round of italian municipal elections happened in 2024, i was trying, at least this time, to reasonably think about picking the then current mayor and the only opponent (that was also a former basketball teammate of mine, with the difference he was actually useful on the court and i was basically just a glorified mascot). What happened? i was playing Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled in order to complete the list of trophies and unlock every decal / set of wheels / custom item i could, and during election day i spent most of the afternoon playing with my older brother as a second player supporting me in hitting my CPU opponents with missiles, bombs... we succeeded, we had fun, and hyped for this nice set of events i arrived almost late to my restaurant job completely forgetting i was supposed to bring with me the voting document. A few days later, i read some interviews between the two contenders and... yeah, i didn't regret having avoided to vote once again, as i began doing since 2016 with just that 2019 exception told before. Even for a municipal election, confrontation seemed to have lost any tact or dignity, it was, even at this level, the same "we are the good guys, they are evil" fanaticism that completely turned me off politics since years before and was the main reason why i stopped supporting the left parties and refused to vote in 2016, 2018 and 2022 at italian major general elections, no matter how anyone would have pressured me to support the other side that i still dislike or bring me back to the one i have abandoned.

By the way, the list that won again in 2024 fell apart in early 2025 because of a building site scandal, so new mayor elections were organized last may or june and despite receiving minor pressure to vote for this or that from family members and having a extra half day to decide, i stayed home once again.

I've done it for the last few years as it's super easy for me. Any election comes and there's the pre-voting stands at our libraries so I can just go vote during work hours. So why would I not

@Zarutaku But are the people who don't vote a good representation of the general population? Voting trends vary greatly by age, and it's statistically the younger folks who are the most likely not to vote.

I don't know anything about such a thing.
I only care about anime and sports.
