Subaru has finally come out of his catatonic phase into his grimdark phase. (That it has been brought about by a guy named Petelgeuse ("🅿️etelgeuse," ugh. 🙄) is a separate matter.)

I really like how this arc has epitomized the archetype of "angry young man." Subaru keeps "failing" so he keeps trying to prove himself through "good deeds". But because he's coming at it from a place of dissatisfaction it keeps not working. Sisyphean task my beloved.

(It's not like he wasn't feeling defensive and hurt coming into this arc, so to keep heaping it on top, plus a large helping of PTSD, really isn't helping matters. Burnt out man is burnt out even more by life (and death!). Shockingly, his emotional maturity is an all time low. 😅)

The scenes with the White Whale were really cool. Really loved the scale and unfathomability. (It's big, it's unfeeling, and you don't even know where it is.) Subaru crashing out cringefail style in the fog was honestly completely understandable. Like, girl. The killer.
I also like how Otto ended up betraying Subaru. This whole time, I've kind of felt like they were foils, so to have Subaru betrayed by "himself" is so—👌

(On the other hand, Rem being forgotten kind of felt like an ex machina. Like, I know it put Subaru in the torment nexus, but I can't see the particular series of events that led us to where we are at the end of the volume occurring without her being forgotten. Like, Ram would never act like this. It was funny though.)

The Emilia encounter was so awesome. Subaru tries to come clean and reconcile and for his efforts everyone he has ever known or loved is killed. (Hyperbole, but you understand.) He is taking that soooo personally. (Never turn towards healing. If you even begin to try, the ambiguous killer will get you.)

Puckie's BSOD-ing the world has finally been textualized. His and Subaru's dynamic is one of my favourites, so I always like it when they talk. (Given his resistance to the invisible hands which had just killed Emilia I kept thinking about how maybe he could be someone Subaru could rely on, but he was in too much of a post daughtercide crashout for that to even begin to be a possibility. Still, I hope. 🙏)

Can't believe this is the volume where we got a title drop. Peak novel.
