Have you ever only learned about a famous person's existence when you heard the news of their death?

I feel like the idea of who counts as "famous" has gotten kinda skewed with the rise of YouTube and social media. Have you ever happened to be going about your day and someone stops you and says, "Hey, [random internet personality you never heard about] just died!", and your only reaction is, "Who?" But it also happened to me with really famous actors too... I'm probably just uncultured or something. What about you? Is that something that ever happened to you too?

If this is about Charlie Kirk, you didn't miss out on much by not knowing about him.

I didn't know about Aretha Franklin before she died. She died while I was on vacation in California, so there was A LOT of tributes to her due to her having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was PACKED that day holy shit

Probably multiple times, but I already forgot about them.
No, this isn't my signature.

Happened to me with Hitler. Honestly, a pretty mediocre artist: shaky brushwork, uninspired subject. 4/10 - surprised anyone is a fan.

Choose your favorite Doge meme, it probably died too, I have a friend that mourned every single one of them.

Yes, oftentimes you get curious who someone was only when you hear the news of their death.

Yep, there were many instances like that for me. But, if we're talking about Charlie Kirk specifically, he was a famous person who I was decently familiar with, since I've seen quite a number of his debate videos on YouTube prior to his death.

Kind of since I do not follow the political sphere of content. My only take away from Kirk was that he was a 6"5 chad that played on multiple countries messaging teams. I tend to forget celebs overtime.

@MelodyOfMemory You're not supposed to say that name out loud or the mods will lock my thread for being controversial (again).😱

*reads more of the thread* Never mind, everyone is talking about him now. I'm just gonna cross my fingers.

@LSSJ_Chloe Somehow, I didn’t know about her either. Which could be explained because I'm not from the USA, but I did know who Whitney Houston was when she died. So I'm pretty sure it's all because her (Aretha Franklin) music just wasn't played at all in my local radio stations.

Hmm. So you were willingly watching his content, eh? *eyeing you out with suspicion*

@StewedBeefHaunch

I grew up with a lot more grunge, rock, and early 2000s pop so she kinda just slipped through my radar due to not being as familiar with soul and R&B at the time. Music was always more my mother's area of expertise and she just so happened to never really listen to Aretha Franklin around me so I had like 0 exposure to her growing up.

Yes it's certainly possible that many people will only really get to hear about someone because there is a higher media attention after their death. I'm not celebrating anyone's death, but the most I feel in such cases is a bit of sympathy particularly when they are a parent and leave some children behind, but I don't want to talk about it further. Someone already drained me in a DM about this topic, I don't need more people that continue to tire me out even more socially. Now as for other people: it's perfectly alright not knowing about every possibly "(in)famous" person, particularly when you have nothing to do with them

edit: @149597871 I guess it didn't help, the mods have a strong spell user in their ranks, too!

v

Yeah, can't be helped, perhaps people need to be more subtle next time

I cast a spell. The mods can't see this thread. You're safe, fleurbleue!

@Noboru

Damn, a miscalculation on my part.

I'm pretty sure what we are doing is a violation of its own, so I'll stop.

I feel like many famous people who pass are often in their 70s to 90s. I will admit I do not know famous scientists names or people who have made our world for the better since our society does not prop them up while they were alive but I do believe I feel the affects of many of them.

What a topic, but yes it happens plenty of times. Often when an old film/tv star that's like 90+ years old dies I'm unfamiliar with them. And on the opposite end when some young tik tok or rapper dies, I have zero clue who they are.

Maybe when it comes to some wrestlers, as that's within my own orbit. I know when Perro Aguayo Jr died it was kind-of a big deal, as it involved Rey Mysterio and Konnan - who I am familiar with, but the guy who passed wasn't familiar to me, as I don't follow the promotions they wrestled in. Ditto for Hana Kimura.

But like when you hear about these influencer girls getting murdered in foreign countries than no, no chance of knowing who they were/are and what they did.
Charlie Kirk though I sort-of knew who he was vaguely from the stuff I watch.

Me with Michael Jackson, actually. One of the earliest big news stories I remember is his death. Not that I was completely unexposed to him at that point, though; "Blame it on the Boogie" was on my grade 1 gym teacher's boombox mixtape but I never knew the artist's name.
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.
