I heard NieR:Automata has to be played three times to get the true ending. How does the anime deal with that?

The first two playthroughs have the same story but from different character's perspectives, and the third playthrough continues the story after that. So it wasn't hard to adapt it.

In game, A&B ending/route is the same , played from different perspectives, and added cut scenes and dialogue throughout gameplay. The game has one route that follows the events after A&B leading up to C/D endings. You will have to make a choice and that choice decides whether you get Ending C or Ending D. you can use chapter select (available later in game) to go back and play the final scene and make the other choice to get the other ending.

The anime follows the storyline combining routes A&B then continues going on to the C/D/E route. The anime follows to the end of C&E. If I remember correctly, they never showed ending D in the anime. But both C/D can leads to ending E which is the "true ending" of Nier Automata.

I really enjoyed the anime, but I had already played the game all the way through. They did a good job trying to incorporate as much of this complex game into 24eps. They missed a bit more of the philosophical side of the machines compared to the game, but overall, 10/10.
The anime added more scenes to ending E to really get your heartstrings.

Hope this gives some clarity!

Imo they did as well as they possibly could to give us the spirit of ending E. Obviously since it’s an adaptation they can’t handle it the same way as they could in the game but I think for the medium they were given they did a great job at giving us the same message that ending does. Entire second half is 10/10.

one of the best, for sure, but because it doesn't try to just adapt the game's story into the anime format. It expands things that are only vaguely told in the game or spin offs into full episodes, makes references to the other NieR game and is clearly intended for people who already played both games, not for newcomers. It just does an incredible work at adapting a game that relies on the interactive format of videogames for almost every single great moment it has, by creating new great moments to replace the ones that couldn't be translated to a series.
