Z hates pirates so much that as soon as he found out that Straw Hats were pirates, he immediately tried to kill them even through they saved his life. He also tried to start the apocalypse and believes that killing all those innocent civilians is a small price to pay for ending piracy once and for all.

Yet, in the end, after Luffy defeats and decides not to kill him, Z decides to
Does that even make sense? He was willing to destroy the world and tried to destroy Luffy's ship, but just because Luffy beat him up he decides that he will give up his life to save Luffy? I think it was stangely out-of-character.

Yeah it’s a weird, but enjoyable ending.

He probably had a change of mind, nothing unusual.

.

the man had his troubles, was in pain and full of hate. he knew his path was radical and probably not the solution. he questioned himself already

Instead of killing Zephyr, Luffy chooses to spare him, showing Zephyr that not all pirates are evil and that some, like Luffy, embody ideals—such as protecting friends and dreams—that Zephyr once fought for as a Marine

he aspired to be a hero in his youth and after the fight, he respected Luffy. that's why he decides to once again, protect the innocent.

the man is very troubled and well written. that's my favorite part of the movie and to me, the very best.
