Ok so I'm really loving the show but since the beginning I wanted to also read the novel, I really want to soak in this peice of fiction, But the issue is that I want to also enjoy the anime. You see I think as a medium animation is far better than novel or manga when it comes to fictional settings, So I want some advice how I should approach the novel so it doesn't hinder my anime watching experience. should I start it and read slowly so I don't overtake the show or should I read after season 1 or should I read it a decade later after the show is finished

You will regret it if you read the novel now. At least wait untill episode 13 released.

Episode 10, 12 and 13 would be much better if you dont read the novel.
Go read 'Mediterranean Hegemon of Ancient Greece' If you like webnovel with historical, military and kingdom building genre.

If you wanna read a novel. Read from start Purchase new physical book that will be out in few day. it will be better experience with some illustration. They are adapting in event based structure so it's better to read from start to not miss fluff between fights. Instead you can wait for anime to finish then continue from volume 2

Read it after season one ends if you want to read. It should increase the enjoyment of some scenes. You can start with volume 2 or read vol 1 if you want the original experience.

Based off the trailers and pacing it will likely end the anime at the end of the first book

I'd say wait until anime finishes airing and then read the novel from the start

The donghua follows a more "action" approach. e.g. in the novel, certain things are hinted and may only be important after 50+ chapters. While here, it's more linear. e.g. problem -> some info -> fight

Season one will cover volume 1/ around 213 chapters.

I believe someone suggested reading volume 1 while waiting until the donghua finishes, but I disagree. Context wise, it wouldn't make sense as well as the plot point from the end of Volume 1 would lose its dramatic effect.

So if you want to have the full experience, you can either read the novel and watch the donghua or wait until the end of Season 1 and read it after that.

I also suggest not looking for art or going to the Reddit as there can be huge spoilers.

Tbh just go ahead and read the novel (from the start) if you can
The best kind of experience imo is reading in-parallel alongside watching afterwards
The medium of the WN does deliver all the emotions better than the Donghua, even without the soundtracks or whatnot, trust me!
And seeing the progress of the Donghua so far
I genuinely do not think it'll make the same impact by the end of the season towards a new viewer, the same way the WN format did with all the build-ups, much extra details/legroom to digest them all etc...
If you can goa head and have the patience to re-start it from the beginning
That is NEVER a matter of regret afterwards, it is *always* more than just worth it, the praise of the source material is not for naught after all!

@fanaticrat Thank you! I will start reading after season 1 finishes.
Does this also mean there will be 5+ seasons of donghua?

probably 6. because vol 6,7,8 can be adapted in one season. and if it happens then every episode of season 6 will be 9.6+ rating .gurranted

@M_Yue No I think I'll be starting the novel from the beginning after season 1 finishes, and then I'll stop until the second 2 starts again, basically I'll be reading parallel to show

@Mathi786 I highly suggest reading the WN first (even if you pausing alongside each Season)
The sheer surprises in the WN are really made to waste in the Adaptation, ngl
for instance this 1st Volume/Season alone already :

Y'all trust me when I tell you, for the most part, the WN source material is like 200% more meticulous down to the last minute detail, characters' decisions, Klein's inner thoughts and characterization, his interactions with everyone notably his family and colleagues being way waaaay more fleshed out and get-used-to "normalized"
the plot with Tingen's Doomsday, the Quill and the Rogue Ex-Archbishop scheme has NOT been obvious at all since it literally HAD NEVER BEEN brought up
beside Chapter 19 (equivalent of early Episode 2~) passing as some trivial fact only to hit us all in the very last moment by surprise
it all makes for an entirely different experience than the Animation adaptation really (in a good way.)

reading beforehand makes for a much more worth it experience imo, since you only have your "1st time impression" only once evidently, Don't waste the sheer heights this story's experience can reach to you pls!

@M_Yue I understand what you're saying, And I'm a big reader of novel and literature, But the issue is I really really like animation as a medium rather than anything else. and you're right, the character description and motivation must have been clearer in the novel bcz you have to feed the imagination in the books but still I prefer animation to be my first experience rather than the novel. and I think shock factor was pretty good in anime too, especially when klien died in the finale. So overall I've decided to wait for the Movies to be released in 2026 than I'll start reading the first volume.
