I read a small time Light novel series called Duan Surk. It has 24 volumes printed in japan, with the first part of the series printed in english [four 2-in-1 books]. It first came out in 1996 and the first english translation released in 2006 by Tokyopop.

It has a character a lot like Megumin named Anies [Agnis in english ver] who is a witch that only knows an extremely powerful fire spell that is like an explosion, she can only use it once then she passes out, and she refuses to learn any other type cause it's all she likes. There are also a few scenes VERY similar to Konosuba where the interaction with her releasing the spell is almost exactly like that of Kazuma and Megumin. I think the similarity is too close for it to be a coincidence. The series is much more popular in japan too, so it is very likely Natsume Akatsuki read the series and was inspired by Anies to make Megumin. Read it for yourself and be the judge. You can find them online to download where you can check the Anies sections for yourself.

I think there is an old anime about a guy who reincarnates in another world with a cute and good goddess who wants to help everyone. I think this one and Mushoku Tensei were the main inspirations.

Do you remember what anime that was or how to find it?
Mushoku Tensei started November 22, 2012 and Konosuba started December 20, 2012 on the same site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, so I don't think that's true.

Well, maybe in Japan this fact only made Megumin more popular...?
I mean, it's not unusual for author to basically copy a character base and then make something different.

Shin Megami Tensei literally copied Stephen Hawkings and made him a character named... Stephen.
