Hey, made a topic in GD and was linked here but a kind stranger.

I've always used a laptop up until recently to watch anime on, using headphones (sennheiser 202 if it matters), and have had no problems with sound. However, I've now got a desktop, plus a nice phat screen, which naturally overrules the laptop.
However, upon plugging in the headphones into the desktop computer, and trying to watch an anime episode, I discovered that the sound was completely screwy. It was high pitched and almost devoid of bass.
So, I messed around a bit and soon discovered the presence of the unfabulous 'Realtek HD Audio Manager', which for some reason wants to dominate my sound control on the desktop into oblivion. Since I didn't get the computer brand new, I basically didn't have a choice in what was installed on it or anything.

But anyway, I've been trying to figure the sound out, and have managed to improve it through messing with the equalizer and other various options. However there's always a constant static coming through the headphones, regardless of the volume, or any changes to the settings. Plus, I can never get the sound to play without some annoying scratchy sound that accompanies characters' voices; as well as that same sound that's produced when someone puts their mouth right up to a microphone and yells really loudly (i dont know how else to describe it). It seems playing around with Realtek has also managed to slightly fuck up the sound coming from the desktop speakers as well, when the headphones AREN'T plugged in - at least when watching anime.
I just went back and tried using my laptop again, to make sure that it WAS just the desktop computer's fault, and indeed the sound comes out just fine through the laptop.

So...does anyone have any suggestions/solutions? Maybe uninstalling this "realtek" crap would help..?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's still the same. =/

Although I did manage to get rid of the background static via changing the thing surrounded by the red box from 'headphone' to 'line out'.

Oh, and another thing I should mention is that when I minimize windows or w/e, a slightly high pitched beep comes through the headphones.

Here's some screenshots of my current Realtek settings in case it helps.

hmm well that was the only thing I could think of which might cause the static sound. Maybe someone else could chime in...

for the voice pitch reset this part back to 0. and make sure the karaoke isn't on.

Your interface may be different, but I'm sure the option is there somewhere...

good luck

btw, are you watching your anime streamed from the net? also, can you try listening to an mp3 file(w/ voice preferably) and report back on how it sounds?

I edited my above post with a few things - I've fixed the static sound, however there's still some other sound problems unfortunately.

And nah I watch all my anime directly from my hard drive.
Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.

I was talking with a friend about this problem, and he thinks that the problem could be that I'm using a low end chip in my sound card, or the chip is damaged, or I'm using very old drivers. I'm pretty sure it's not the drivers, so I'm thinking that unless someone spots something that's should be different in the above pictures, getting a new sound card would be the best option.

That could possibly be your problem. They sell cheaper soundcards for 25-30$, but I would suggest buying from a site with a money back guarantee -just in case- it's not.

A lot of issues can cause sound problems, but your headphones seems to work fine on other computers, and you have tried plenty steps listed here so a hardware problem is highly possible, especially with older hardware.

Did you try re installing the sound drivers by the way?

I'm afraid I wouldn't know how to reinstall the sound drivers. However, I've discovered that I don't have the sound problem with newer anime, and I can still use my laptop to watch older anime without sound problems, so I'll just alternate between the two computers for now until I get a new sound card or fix the problem some other way.

I've got a friend who could help me out with the sound drivers and anything else.

Thanks a lot for your help, I guess you can consider this solved.

Codec problem probably? which is why I asked if mp3s worked fine or not...

also, do you know the specs of your PC? if it's too weak to decode the 'new animes' properly, a sound card won't fix that...
