| For some reason or another I checked the local theatre listing on Sunday…and was very surprised to see that this movie was being screened. Upon that I quickly announced that I was changing my Monday evening plans to friend whose bar I usually visit then. I’ve watched this movie off a VHS tape copy, laserdisc, and DVD. Watching it on the big screen was a different experience; yup, it’s bigger, a touch louder, and, in several places, a better viewing thanks to the larger scale. I was ready to concede that the artwork and animation might not have aged too well in some places. For example, I noticed how the writing on the helicopters (SDF and civilian) was hand painted, something I had never paid any attention to in the past. All in all, I’m pleased that I had taken the time to watch this in a movie theatre. It was really nice to be able to watch it in the scale it had been designed for. And it was a bit of fun spotting the elements which got carried over to Oshii’s subsequent works (I’m thinking primarily of the contemplative views of the metropolis). This may not be a masterpiece but it’s still fun to watch. |
| Third-rate story that only matters in a historical context. Other than that don't bother watching. |
