I've been a member at other fan forums (like Alias' sd-1.com) that have the most amazing thread. They host/hosted official monthly challenges with special circumstances (examples; the mod provides a handful of stock photos that can only be used; only black and white with the addition of one color; best couple theme; episode recap theme; designated textures or fonts, blending challenge, etc...) which other forum members vote on. So much talent and inspiration shows up while the site itself gets alot of hits. Besides, I think everybody would appreciate the wallpapers ^^ It's so much fun, too! I mean, the possibilities are endless...

Of course there are guidelines that must be followed (always credit textures/brushes/photos/fonts, 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution, one entry per person, submitted entries cannot be edited, deadlines for both entering and voting).

I guess it's hard to completely explain, so poke around sd-1.com > Creative Pursuits > Alias Fan Art and Vids > Wallpaper/Art Challenges however, I think you need to register...

What do you think?

I think perhaps if someone is willing to put the time and effort in to hosting this event, I don't have a problem supporting it.

On a couple of other forums I'm on, we do something similar called Photoshop Friday. But usually the goal is to be clever/funny, more so than making an impressive shop (although those get points too).

I think monthly wallpaper contests would be tons of fun! And then users can add to their wallpaper collections ^o^

And art jams (drawings/paintings) are always fun...but there are very few artists on here that are active on the forums...that's the only thing I'm worried about--MAL has like, five artists XD

Hmm... Is there a way to bring those few artists into this discussion? Maybe they'd be willing to lend their opinions/support.

Of course, I'd be willing to help set this up. (I would volunteer for the "hosting" part except that I don't know what that title means and what jobs would be required of me... since I'm kinda new I can't guarantee I know how to do everything...)

Well, you're speaking to one of them X)! (my sig and avi are both works of mine). I'll send PMs to some of the others and see if they can maybe check this out and leave some input =D

As for hosting, I've hosted several Photoshop Fridays/art jams in the past, and would be more than happy to help you ^__^

Although, I think you would probably get more response from Wallpaper contests than art jams, buuuut I could be wrong (^o^)

Run this under MAL Awards? I can help support but someone else will have to host and do the bulk of the work. I have enough jobs on MAL as it is. @.@

I've never done something like this, but I enjoy drawing and what not. I would be willing to host it with a bit of help on setting up the rules. I have plenty of time to do such a thing, just not enough know-how on what art jams are since I've never seen one myself. Anyway, this sounds like a lot of fun actually. I would be happy to see this~!

not true, everyone can be an artist. I mean, people should just try to do art. See it as a challenge to those who wanna learn drawing.

hello! Scrums brought me here! There is 8 members in the Art Club so at least we'll have 8 participants for the art jam. I'm in but I'm afraid I can't use photoshop to save my life-only Indesign and that's no use. So I'll join anything that involves manual work :D

Yay! I think it's totally do-able.

I totally understand the wallpaper aspect, but I'm kinda clueless about art jam-ness so if anyone else would be willing to spearhead that... It actually sounds like there's more support for that particular media so maybe it could be organized differently/separately.

Kanashimi, would you want to host the wallpaper concept? I'll definately help out. I've already started brainstorming July (too soon?) entry rules. Feel free to PM me with your questions/comments/ideas/concerns. I guess I'll extend that to everyone who wants to know more specifics about this topic.

How would voting work?

How many photoshoppers can we count on? By the way, Talon's right; I want to encourage EVERYBODY to try it, even if photoshops/paintshops aren't your thing.

Okay, here's what I think we should do. I've made a club (Art Jam) that we can use to propose ideas, and participants in art jams can post their drawing in the club pictures (that will be cleaned out once a month).

Here is the process that I had in mind:
-we hold a discussion in the club to decide a theme
-the "host" of that month's art jam picks the theme (or substitutes their own)
-the host creates a topic on the boards to announce the theme of that month's art jam
-art jammers can post their drawing in the topic or in the clubs pictures (or both) (there also shouldn't be any requirement that jammers be members of the club; I just made the club as a way to keep everything organized in one place)
-a separate topic is made to vote on a jam "winner" (maybe in the MAL awards area? while the art jam topic itself is in the art area)
-winner is featured in the club until the next month's winner is announced
-hosts/clubs officers clean out the club pictures, and the process starts again

Oh, and I have been saying "monthly," but what do you guys think? Should it be done on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis?

All sounds good to me, Scrum! I think monthly is a bit long and weekly is a bit short for those that work or go to school. bi-weekly has my vote.

I'm just going to make the suggest here, but I believe if we are going to have a art jam involving a voting portion, then wouldn't it be wiser to be bi-monthly. Have a month for entires and a month for voting only due to the fact that this would be easier considering daily time constraints, not only that but promoting the voting to get as many people involved as possible?

I'd be happy to support it, but I do think that July is too soon considering it is July. If anything, we can talk about rules and what not via PM. Voting would more than likely work with a poll function depending on who enters the contest.

Well, we could also overlap the voting and drawing periods--so that while people are making/posting entries for the art jam, the vote is being held for the previous art jam. Either way, I think weekly is definitely out.

this sounds like a really cool idea, but I really suck at art...
I do like looking at it though! So this contest could turn out some really cool looking stuff ^^

This is a brilliant idea. If we're lucky, this may attract more users to the forums, at least the artistically interested ones. Also, if some of you have DeviantArt profiles, perhaps you could do some shameless advertising in DA's anime circles, and voila, even more members for the MAL legions! :D
Can't say I'm much of an artist myself, I usually just muck away with pen and paper once in a while, but who knows, maybe I will join in as well (Although that's a big maybe).
Still, a smashing idea. Perhaps we will get some nice wallies out of this as well...

XD Anything that I make for an art jam that I post on DA, I will include a link back to the forums =D

And this isn't restricted to "faboo dedicated artists only." XDDD Any time you feel like joining in, we would love to have you =D

I do wallpapers a lot so I find this idea to really interesting. I don't actually find a lot of wall contests, just icon contests on blog communities (which I find very fun and challenging).

2 weeks for an entry time period maybe? I know one week seems too short but I think that increasing it to something like a month (just next round value) would be too long.
