How would you react if someone told you they killed a cat to get rid of it?

So, a family member told me last Saturday that one of her coworkers said he once killed his own cat. Somehow his girlfriend said she didn't want the cat anymore and asked him to get rid of it, and the only idea that ran through his mind was to choke the cat to death with a cable tie around its neck...

Honestly, this story made me a bit sick (and angry), and it did the same to my family member. She never knew her coworker (who always seemed pretty normal) could do what is actually a crime. She started to ignore that coworker as much as she could afterwards, but doesn't seem too eager to snitch on him. If I were her, the least I'd do would be to tell freaking everybody in the workplace what he did to make it all the more awkward for him.

But how would you react to such a thing yourself? And what would you personally do if you were in such a situation?

I might ask why they got the cat in the first place.
No, this isn't my signature.

That's unhinged and psychopathic. It's also illegal. I would report them to the cops. I would also try and get them fired.

He once did it, is not like he did it last friday, and it is not like he is going to repeat this. Should this secret spoil both the cat and the human life? Poor cat, why didn't they just try to find it a new home. This was not much different from people who leave their dogs at forest.

Gossiping about him is a shit solution. Let him go around sharing his secrets himself. Who knows what other cat in a bag coworkers keep? Who knows what more you might listen if you don't get flagged as a snitch? If he did that to a cat his gf found a nuisance, what he might do to her, who threatens his carreer?

It does sound very suspect for someone to kill their pet like that. I would of told him to put the pet up for adoption instead, or dealt with it in a professional manner. I would avoid spreading info like gossip especially when it can't be confirmed as true easily.

I have been in a situation of the sort. Was walking down one of the streets here, some junkie and 2 of his friends had this amazing idea to kick a kitty.I just saw red and went for him,at that moment I legit didn't give a fuck whether I'd kill him or not, after a pretty brutal fight we were all arrested and sent to the hospital before formal processing, the person in question had 2 broken ribs and a broken mandibulae, other 2 had minor injuries,I had a broken nose and some bruises. There was some back and fourth threats of suing mainly from their camp but overall after their drug tests came back and 1 had a warrant out they backed out of that. The important thing is that the kitty survived and I am hoping that it's living a healthy life to this day.

Imagine working with people who retell your confessions on an anime forum. Pretty brutal, honestly...

He killed somebody - so what? As if I had never killed anyone... The man is a fool though: cats have nine lives, you can't kill them for good. I bet the cat was reborn somewhere in Bangladesh and is now running its soft paws over the pages of the Satanic Bible, bestowing nothing but the best on its killer.

Not a very bright kid - trading his immortal soul for the whim of some woman. If it had at least been for ice cream, I would understand. Chocolate-coated, no nuts.

More proof that people who own pets are uncivilized. A civilized person would have used a gun instead.

I'd never speak with that person again and if it was at a workplace like in your example I'd obviously not feel comfortable about having to work with such a sick person. Animal abusers need to be locked up
I've luckily never had to be in a situation like that myself and the closest would be a friend of mine who told me after she had gone to get a haircut that the woman cutting the hair told her that she'd spray water on cats who entered her property to chase them away. My friend naturally boycotted that place afterwards

The question doesn't mention abuse though, just killing. I suppose you don't want all animal killers locked up? That would imply all humans would have to stop eating meat.

She did in the legal definition of the word. What she described would be categorized as animal abuse in most (if not all) western countries, and so I assume in Canada as well

Waw, I wasn't exactly expecting that. Killing newborn cats because you can't handle them or find them a home is one thing, but killing your pet because your gf got tired of it is... >.> I hope he ate it instead of letting all that meat go to waste, that'd make things slightly more tolerable.

Regarding what I'd do about it... What do you want me to do? I have no evidence whatsoever and I'm not going to start gossiping about coworkers all around the place. I'd just not ask him to keep my cat when I go on holidays...

@NS2D The legal definitions are rather convenient, they often don't categorize poor keeping conditions as abuse, in favor of the animal farming industry.

Same with certain practices during the slaughtering process, but if the animals are eaten, the majority seems to willing accept all this as a necessary evil, and shape the law accordingly.

@Zarutaku I agree that stricter laws and harsher enforcement of laws to protect the well being of animals would be good, both for animals that are pets but also those that exist within the meat, fur, and other animal product industries. I'm not a vegan though and I don't think that there is anything inherently morally wrong with for example farms growing animals for food as long as the whole process is done as humanely as possible. That's a completely different topic from what fleurbleue mentioned though

Not react to it. Even though I like cats people tend to say these things to get a reaction out of you, because the majority of the world is in a reactionary state. Even if it really did happen, you can't control people's actions or opinions. It is important to not take things too seriously or too personally, since people do stupid things and say stupid stuff everyday, because they are not aware of the internal suffering they pent up inside them.

Well, it's not like he shared all that out of the blue either. They were doing small talk and mentioned how owning cats can be trouble (because he still has cats, two of them!) and my family member said he was still free to find them better homes if he didn't feel like having cats anymore. And it was from that point that he began to tell the tale of how he once got rid of a cat. The strangest thing is that it seemed like he somehow didn’t expect this revelation to create any awkwardness like it was a totally normal thing to do.

@Morningstar991 You're a true one. 🫡 I probably only would have tried to catch the poor kitty to run away with it.

@Zarutaku He's obviously talking about what I mentioned in my OP and not the title alone. Now it just sounds like you're baiting him. Sure, it's legal to euthanize a cat to get rid of it (I'm still going to judge you for it anyway, though). But here we were talking about how someone who voluntarily made them suffer in order to kill them. Unless you're saying one big cable tie around around your neck would be a peaceful way to kill you?

The title question is insufficient, it should say "killed painfully"

@Zarutaku I meant to make this thread specifically to talk about what was written in my OP, and what people would do in this situation, not in a broader sense. If people are too lazy to read my OP, that's their problem.

Some pet owners really should never ever own pets. Both the guy and his girlfriend were clearly in the wrong. Deciding to have a pet isn't just a willy-nilly decision—it's a commitment and should be very well-thought-out. You can't just abandon or kill your cat for the sake of convenience..

fleurbleue said:

I would do something very similar as well—tell everyone in the workplace what he did to make things awkward for him.

I'd take 'em around a dark corner so there's no witnesses and then flatten them out before anonymously tipping off the police. Then I'd simply go home. :)
I don't believe in violence for any other reason besides animal abuse, though. There's nothing more sickening to me then using your overwhelming power to hurt helpless and weak animals, especially when they trust you and rely on you.
I certainly hope that story you told isn't true.

I'd say they're a horrible person. That's no way to treat any pet. A pet is reliant on you so you take responsibility of it. And I'm pretty sure in a lot of places that animal cruelty and illegal. You're canadian and I'd bet it's illegal there as well

just don't do this shit to pets ever
