Well it was not also his fault. Put yourself in his place like your crush loves you back like you do but the things made her love you was all a lie, so ? You'll feel that you lied to her all the time and will think you don't deserve her. That's what happened with shouta he thought that Sawako loved him for a lot of reasons but he misunderstood that the reasons were all wrong that he is not charming, not caring, blah blah.

The whole show, even tho I rate it highly and loved it, seems to exaggerate the trope of Japanese kids being painfully shy, as well as socially awkward to an extreme degree. However, in the frame it sets out, everyone acts within their character parameters and things work out great so a few moments of uncertainty and self doubt from a guy who doesn’t believe in himself are perfectly ok.

It felt like there was the aspect of not believing in himself as someone mentioned because he felt like he was lying to her, but I think he also wanted to try and hold himself back because he thought it might just push her away if he acted how he wanted instead of how he thought he should. Both problems fed into each other. He couldn't act because he wanted to act "proper", which makes him feel like he's lying, but to act truthfully it wouldn't be "proper". Of course as a watcher it seems silly but he's supposed to be a ~17 year old kid so he can make dumb mistakes like that.

Yeah, this really bothered me. I mean, we fought our way through all of this already in the first season, and especially the second season. It was a great and satisfying watch, those 37 episodes. They made it, and were finally together! Boyfriend and girlfriend now. It made me so angry that they essentially torpedoed the relationship this season. It’s a shame, because the stories of Chizu and Ryu, and Ayane and Kento were done so well, so perfectly, they were amazing. It was worth the wait, and I would still highly recommend watching this season for those parts alone. I just really didn’t like how the series treated our main characters at all. It left me fuming and ranting to myself even days later.

@scottydeuce i thought exactly the same, i just feel the author always takes a lot of time to address the conflict, the answer or explanation always come very late imo, to a point where i dont care. And then supposedly he was this cold with her for 6 months like cmon. I rated this season highly as well cuz i think everything else was pretty good.

Let's not forget the character-writing is a prime example of 2000's shoujo manga. It's still one of my favorite romance shows, but as expected the cliches haven't aged well especially for 2020's anime fans

Shouta basically put distance to Sawako so his desires wouldn't get out of control - he was in heat, yeah. He feared Sawako would possibly run away if he became TOO intimate towards her and he didn't wanna take advantage of her. The manga made it clearer that his teenage thoughts were too impure for shy Sawako
