How important is it to have read Angelic layer before?

Well, the title said it. I know that Angelic layer plays before Chobits, but I wonder if it is absolutely necessary to it or if I can just read it after.

I’ve never read Angelic Layer and had no issues with Chobits. If the series are connected it’s only very, very loosely.

Knowing Angelic layer before reading is least important. The whole connection is meantoned in just one chapter. If you have read it then you can better know what they're referring to but it's more a nod than some crucial knolige. Still if you like Clamp I'll say Angelic layer is a fine read.

I got Angelic Layer out of my library a year ago before reading chobits. I didn’t really find I needed to read it before chobits after completing it. I enjoyed the art, but the battle scenes can be tedious after a while. It’s a cute little series & if you don’t mind endless battles between different robots then it’s your cup of tea :)

Personally, there’s two characters in Angelic Layer that is tied into Chobits which I think makes an impact (briefly), which is why reading Angelic Layer first would make the most sense, to get you connected to the characters in preparation for Chobits. It’s not mandatory to read Angelic Layer, but having the knowledge of the characters and story prior to Chobits has more impact for sure.

You won't even notice the Chobits anime has Angelic Layer references if you haven't watched Angelic Layer. I heard Chobits manga has more references though.
