I know its not exactly answering your question but there is a manga (without an anime adaptation) called 'Oyasumi Punpun'. Even though its plot is very different from Lain, the vibe I got while reading it was very similar. I'd heavily recommend it.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the insanity that is this show. Other users already mentioned some classic banger hits from the psychological genre, but my other favorite is Evangelion.

I've been meaning to catch Perfect Blue, I watched Paprika somewhat recently and I really enjoyed it. I'd like to slip that in sometime soon.
