Bro discovers character development.
Subaru humiliating himself served a purpose for his development, because this embarrassment and subsequent argument with Emila was his lowest point and Rem gave him well deserved kick in the butt to motivate him.
Advice for the future: Do not immidietly assume the worst, that it is just bad wiring or nothing will improve.

i think it's better to be clear things up when you are dealing with love confessions from someone very close to you.

because eventually they will figure out why they got rejected and realising that by themselves will hurt them more than an upfront confrontation from your side.

rem already knew that subaru had a thing for emilia even then she took her chance. subaru knew this and chose to turn her down with the truth, in turn giving rem more clarity about her feelings' future

Glad you enjoyed it :). I feel the same, Rem doesn't deserve Subaru's love at all, for as much as I wish he loved Rem instead. But it's alright he has feelings for Emilia, after all, she was the first one he encountered when he got into this new world and was the first one to care about him, even tho we don't see Emilia really often in the first season.
It's just how it is, but Rem always remains my favorite.

yeah bro that's just the beginning ending of s1 at the cliffhanger and making another season after 4 years was truly a crime imo (s1 came out in 2016 and s2 in 2020)

It still genuinely baffles me that people don't understand why Subaru likes Emilia, or get mad at him for the whole "I love Emilia" thing. And saying "Subaru doesn't deserve Rem's love" is absolutely wild. Other way around tbh. Anyways glad you kept going and liked the show, the cringe is necessary for the character development. Season 2 is even better that 1 in almost all aspects, hope you keep going.

I haven't seen S2 yet, but the reason why a lot of people don't get it is because when Rem confesses, Subaru has spent almost NO TIME with Emilia. He's basically just riding the high off of the first day he met her, and his initial thoughts about her.

Meanwhile, he's spent a TON of time with Rem, and has gotten much closer to her over that time than he has with Emilia. Obviously people will like who they like, but it's not hard to see why Rem feels like the more obvious choice at that time.

Facts and in the light novel she literally tortured him for hours. That’s a traumatic experience and you can’t just start looking at somebody the same way ever again. Unlike with Emilia although she’s very clueless about her situation and surroundings she’s been nothing but kind to him. She gave him food, protection and most importantly affection. She was his first friend in this world so it makes complete sense why he would choose Emilia.
