I'd say my 4 favorite anime series of all time (Berserk, Monster, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) all essentially fall under this category. Essentially, shows that just aim to completely emotionally break down the audience and then build them back up.
