I'm not really interested in this show in particular but this "set in the future where the sport has now become very popular" caught my attention. Since there's a lot of niche sports anime I wonder why shows don't do this more often? Or am I just ignorant of those that do?

I think most shows just exist in an alternate world where their sports are more popular, rather than a future where the sport became more popular. I think the ideas can work quite interchangeably though. This seems like it could be fun idea though if they expanded on it in some way, but it will probably be a forgotten detail.
